TV Media Weekly | October 15 - 21, 2016 8 | Sunday afternoon miere of its eighth season Friday, Oct. 21, on CW must feel very bit- tersweet indeed. A new season of a favorite show is always exciting, but the news that this season will be the supernatural drama's last adds a sad note to its premiere. Fans of the show, though, have been poring over clues leaked on- line about just what might hap- pen in what promises to be an ex- plosive end to the series. Probably the biggest news is that former series star Nina Dobrev ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower," 2012) has been confirmed to be returning at some point in the season, after leaving at the end of season 6. She played Elena Gilbert during the show's first six seasons, a hu- man high schooler caught up in a relationship with two vampire brothers, played by Paul Wesley ("Fallen") and Ian Somerhalder ("Lost"). Exactly what her role, or in how many episodes she'll be appear- ing, remains under wraps. Elena's been deep in a supernatural slum- ber since the end season 6, which effectively removed her from the show, but if she wakes up, it could rekindle some of the romances that first hooked fans back in 2009. All good things must come to an end, and "The Vampire Diaries" is no exception. The eighth and fi- nal season premieres Friday, Oct. 21, on CW. Super-sized 'Superstore': NBC is showing some faith in one of its new comedies. The second season of "Superstore," a sitcom from the Emmy-nominated writer- producer of "The Office," Justin Spitzer, premiered at the end of September, and now it's been giv- en a full-season pickup. The peacock network had origi- nally ordered only 13 episodes for the second season of the single- camera comedy, but strong rat- ings and viewership numbers from the season 2 sneak peek back in August and the official season 2 premiere Sept. 22 made it a no-brainer for NBC Entertain- ment president Jennifer Salke. "We're very proud of 'Super- store' and we were so happy to see fantastic viewing levels with the preview during the Olympics, as well as [the season premiere's] ratings in its new Thursday anchor time period," Salke said at the time of the pickup announcement. "Superstore" stars Golden Globe-winning actress America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty") as Amy, one of the many employees who work at the fictional big-box store Cloud 9. The sneak-peek episode, which coincided with NBC's Olym- pic coverage, saw 11.1 million people tune in and earned a 3.7 rating in adults aged 18 to 49. Season 2 premiered to 5.5 million eyeballs with a 1.5 rating/6 share in adults aged 18 to 49. A new episode of "Superstore" airs Thursday, Oct. 20, on NBC. 10/16 1 PM 1:30 2 PM 2:30 3 PM 3:30 4 PM 4:30 5 PM 5:30 6 PM 6:30 S1 S2 WTTV 4 NFL Football Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots Site: Gillette Stadium -- Foxborough, Mass.
