JERSEY SHORE IMAGES
WINTERTIME ALONG BARNEGAT BAY, continued from page 73
Left: Cedar Waxwings, Island Beach State Park.
It's always a treat to see the colorful cedar
waxwing. It's special when you have an
opportunity to photograph three together.
On this day in February, there were hundreds
of them in the trees along Spizzle Creek in the
park. What a wonderful sight to see. Within
an hour, they were gone.
Below: Bufflehead, Toms River.
Each year, several bufflehead ducks spend
the winter months on this estuary off the
Barnegat Bay. They are very shy, and it is
extremely difficult to get close enough to
photograph them. In this shot, the bufflehead
spotted me through the trees and was on his
way. Males have a large, white patch that
wraps around their head.
Opposite page: Great Blue Heron,
South Seaside Park.
The great blue heron is such a quiet, patient
bird as it moves slowly through shallow
water in search of fish. They are such graceful
birds—they seemingly float through the air in
flight. They can be tough to spot in the high
grasses, but this heron was clearly visible in
the marsh.
