About 1.7 trillion gallons of water are lost annually across the United States. The most common culprit: Aging infrastructure that accommodates leaks when natural deteriora- tion and damage occur. Alongside that statistic is the reality manufacturing businesses have a growing need for water to remain competitive. "Water is often a resource we take for grant- ed, particularly in Milwaukee, where we're located along the Great Lakes," said Michael Lovell, president of Marquette University. Lovell was one of several Milwaukee-area leaders who took the wraps off a new study, "Leverage: Water and Manufacturing," at a symposium Tuesday. Throughout the event, speakers melded the concepts of water conser- vation and the manufacturing sector. Early this year, 50 national leaders and water experts convened and delved into the dual-sided issue as the study was crafted. In addition to Marquette University, Milwaukee- based A.O. Smith Corp. and the U.S. Council on Competitiveness took the reins on the study. Other participants included companies with presences in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. Among them: Badger Meter, Johnson Controls, MillerCoors, Quad/Graphics, Rockwell Automation, the Rexnord Corp. and Tamarack Petroleum Co.
