TV Media Weekly | September 17 - 23, 2016 8 | Sunday afternoon a TV personality or a household name, and a new drama on CBS is using his pre-fame life as its inspi- ration. "Bull" premieres Tuesday, Sept. 20, on the eye network. Michael Weatherly ("NCIS") stars as Dr. Ja- son Bull, a brash-but-charming young psychologist whose life is loosely inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil. Just like his real-life inspiration's early career, Dr. Bull has founded a prolific and successful trial consult- ing firm that draws up strategies to tilt the scales of justice in favor of his wealthy clients. Dr. Bull is a pup- pet master: he combines his insight into human intuition and his mas- tery of psychology to figure out what's going on in the heads of ju- rors, the accused and witnesses. But, of course, he can't do it alone. Freddy Rodríguez ("Six Feet Un- der") stars as Benny Colon, a law- yer and Bull's former brother-in- law who works alongside Bull; Ge- neva Carr ("It's Complicated," 2009) is neurolinguistics expert Marissa Morgan; Jaime Lee Kirch- ner ("The Mob Doctor") is Danielle James, the consulting firm's inves- tigator and a former detective; and Chris Jackson ("Tracers," 2015) is former lineman Chunk Palmer, who picks out what clients should to wear to trial. It may be only loosely based on Dr. Phil, but if "Bull" can latch on to even a sliver of his success, it will be a hit. "Bull" premieres Tuesday, Sept. 20, on CBS. Shonda-lite: Thursdays are getting a bit of a shakeup on ABC — but just a small one. Long con- sidered "ShondaLand" night on the network, thanks to the block of dramas from prolific producer Shonda Rhimes, the all-Shonda bloc is being broken up by "Notori- ous." It premieres Thursday, Sept. 22, on ABC, and airs between ShondaLand's "Grey's Anatomy" and "How to Get Away With Mur- der." Though not a ShondaLand show, "Notorious" should fit right in with its Thursday night neigh- bors. The drama explores the grey area where the law and the media intersect, and it's inspired by the lives of "Larry King Live" producer Wendy Walker and attorney Mark Geragos. Piper Perabo ("Covert Affairs") stars as Julia George, the producer of a cable news show who effort- lessly manipulates the program's guests, and thus controls the news and the headlines. Daniel Sunjata ("The Dark Knight Rises," 2012) stars as the swaggering Jake Gre- gorian, a lawyer with his ear to the ground and connections running throughout L.A.'s elite. J. August Richards ("Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."), Aimee Teegarden ("Friday Night Lights") and Kate Jennings Grant ("Frost/Nixon," 2008) also star in the drama.
