TV Media Weekly | September 10 - 16, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: In the series "NCIS: New Orleans," coroner Dr. Loretta Wade wears colorful hats in the lab. Where can I purchase them? A: Though CBS's online store (at CBSStore.com) has a surprisingly large line of "NCIS"-themed mer- chandise, including caps, you won't find any of Dr. Wade's color- ful scrub hats there. The hats CCH Pounder ("The Shield") wears as Dr. Wade in "NCIS: New Orleans" are custom made by the CBS wardrobe depart- ment — custom for her, no less. "When I first started the show, I knew I wanted to find something unique for her character, consider- ing she spends most of her screen time in scrubs," the show's lead costume designer, Ann Walters, told the New Orleans Times-Pica- yune newspaper. "And it was also practical. I wanted something that worked with her hair." Still, CBS is making the most of the style choice — it even posted a photo gallery on the show's official site dedicated to her headgear. Who knows, it may just be a matter of time before the network starts selling them. If her hats seem a little light- hearted given the work she does, that might have something to do with Pounder's own view of the work of a coroner, which she devel- oped by job-shadowing a member of the Los Angeles County coro- ner's department. "All the people that I met in the coroner's office had a kind of joy and kind of happiness that I found extraordinary, and I wanted to make sure that's part of it, in the sense that they recognize what life is," she said during a panel at CBS's summer press tour in 2014. "I appreciated that." Walters has a pretty large résu- mé of costume-design work, and, interestingly, New Orleans pops up pretty frequently on it. She also worked for the 2009 film "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Or- leans," and for HBO's critically ac- claimed series "Treme," for which she was nominated for a Costume Designers Guild Award. Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media T he celebrities on screen are sizzling this fall, and not just the ones starring in the season's hottest new cable dramas. Anne Bur- rell's back for a ninth season of Food Network's "Worst Cooks in America," and she'll be joined by a familiar face; Rachael Ray is returning for a second season as Anne's co-mentor. The last time Ray squared off against Burrell was back in sea- son 7, when the pair of culinary pros went face to face to train up two groups of celebrities who were total dunces in the kitchen. Well, it's time for Round 2. The second season of "Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition" premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14, on Food Network, with a new batch of celebrities hoping to hone their culinary skills and work out their palates. With $50,000 up for grabs for the eventual winner (to be given to a charity of his or her choice, of course), these culinary dunces will be applying some of the de- votion and drive that's brought them fame and fortune to learn- ing about knife work and emul- sions. And that's what "Worst Cooks" is ultimately about: tak- ing the worst of the worst and turning them into, if not quite the best, at least passable home cooks. So which celebrities have been rustled up for this round of competition? "The Facts of Life" star Mindy Cohn, comedian Tom- my Davidson, "Kyle XY" star Matt Dallas, and star of the 1960s sitcom "I Dream of Jean- nie" Barbara Eden are among the famous folks who will be di- vided into two teams, with each taking on either Burrell or Ray as a mentor in the ways of the cook. Comedian and longtime "Wipeout" co-host John Hen- son, "The Real" co-host Loni Love, "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Kenya Moore, ac- tress and star of "The King of Queens" Nicole Sullivan, and "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino round out the cast of celebrities. These nine celebrities may be some of the worst cooks that Burrell and Ray could come up with, but they're making it their personal mission to whip them into shape — or at least get them to show some slight im- provement. The second season of "Worst Cooks in America: Ce- lebrity Edition" premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14, on Food Network.
