TV Media Weekly | September 10 - 16, 2016 Sunday morning | 7 By Andrew Warren TV Media Masters of drama: There aren't many people out there who can claim to have revolutionized our understanding of an entire field of scientific study. There are even fewer who could also say that they've had an acclaimed TV series made about their lives and their re- search. Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson are two researchers who could make those claims. Show- time's Golden Globe-nominated drama about their lives and their research, "Masters of Sex," kicks off its fourth season Sunday, Sept. 11. Michael Sheen ("Midnight in Paris," 2011) and Lizzy Caplan ("Cloverfield," 2008) return as Masters and Johnson, respectively, a pair of researchers who pio- neered scientific understanding of human sexuality. The duo, working together for more than three de- cades, performed research into what had been a taboo subject. "Masters of Sex" uses Masters and Johnson's real-life professional relationship as a backdrop for a gripping fictionalized drama about their personal lives. Its already- strong supporting cast is being added to this season by a few new faces who join Sheen and Caplan as the show's ongoing plot moves into the swinging 1970s. David Walton ("About a Boy") has been cast in a major role as a prominent attorney who repre- sents Masters and Johnson in a high-profile case that pits the state against science. He'll be joined by Niecy Nash ("Scream Queens"), who has also signed on for a recur- ring role as an Alcoholics Anony- mous chairperson. Other stars lined up to appear this season include Betty Gilpin ("Nurse Jackie"), Erin Karpluk ("Being Erica") and Andre Royo ("The Wire"). In spite of its somewhat risky subject matter and title, "Masters of Sex" has been a hit with critics. It's been nominated for two Gold- en Globes, won two Critics Choice Television Awards and has been nominated for nine Emmys, win- ning one of them. Not bad for a little show about two pioneering scientists. The fourth season of "Masters of Sex" premieres Sunday, Sept. 11, on Showtime.
