Sunday afternoon
season of "Modern Family," and
he's not the only famous guest star
popping up.
Comedian Martin Short
("Maya & Marty"), who will be
starring later this year in NBC's
"Hairspray Live," is also guest
starring, showing up in the sea-
son's second episode as a promo-
tional expert. The Emmy-winning
comedy is set to return Wednes-
day, Sept. 21, on ABC. Fillion's role
is a bit more substantial. He's
scheduled to guest star in multi-
ple episodes as a weatherman,
with what may be the profes-
sion's most appropriate name:
Rainer Shine. The character is set
to appear in three episodes.
Of course, "Castle" isn't Fillion's
only claim to fame. He starred in
the short-lived science fiction
show "Firefly" and its spinoff film
"Serenity" (2005), worked on his
voice acting in the animated film
"Monsters University" (2013), and
is set to appear in next year's
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."
The "Modern Family" appear-
ance indicates that there's no bad
blood or hard feelings from Fillion
towards ABC about "Castle's"
cancelation. Earlier this year, it was
announced that Fillion's co-star
Stana Katic ("CBGB," 2013) would
not be returning for the show's
ninth season.
Another name, another
'Scandal': Shondaland is shaking
things up — again. ABC's "Scan-
dal" has recast a recurring charac-
ter, marking the second time this
has happened in the show's histo-
ry. "Vikings" alum Jessalyn Gilsig
is taking over for Joelle Carter
("Justified") when the popular
soap returns to TV screens mid-
season. No premiere date has yet
been announced for the series.
Carter, who played Jake's (Scott
Foley, "Felicity") bride, has left the
role for a more permanent and
high-profile spot in NBC's upcom-
ing "Chicago Justice," the latest
spinoff in the growing Chicago
family. With "Chicago Justice"
filming in its namesake city and
"Scandal" filming in Los Angeles,
the scheduling conflicts made
dropping the smaller role an obvi-
ous move.
Gilsig starred for three seasons
in History's historical hit "Vi-
kings," and before that she
starred as Terri in Fox's musical
drama "Glee." She's had signifi-
cant roles in "Nip/Tuck," "Boston
Public" and "Heroes," and lent
her voice talents to the animated
film "The Magic Sword: Quest for
Camelot" (1998).
This switchover marks the sec-
ond time that "Scandal" has re-
placed a character with a new ac-
tor due to scheduling issues. Pres-
ident Fitzgerald Grant's (Tony
Goldwyn, "The Last Samurai,"
2003) daughter was originally
played by Madeline Carroll ("Mr.
Popper's Penguins," 2011) before
the role was taken over by Mary
Mouser ("Body of Proof") in
2014.
