While the unraveling of a de-
cade-long union may not sound
like laugh-worthy fare, the show
gives an undeniably comedic look
at two people who just plain don't
like each other anymore. It has its
deep moments, too, though, as
the two slog through the unchart-
ed waters in which they now find
themselves, albeit with many a
furrowed brow and flipped bird.
Parker described the show to "E!
News" as "honest, heartbreaking
and amusing." The series begins
Sunday, Oct. 9, on HBO. For a more
knee-slapping type of humor, look
no further than "Son of Zorn." The
cast is led by "Saturday Night
Live" alum Jason Sudeikis, but
you won't recognize anything but
his voice, since he plays a shred-
ded, long-haired, He-Man-esque
cartoon named Zorn. The animat-
ed warrior hails from the faraway
island of Zephyria, but travels to
real-world Orange County to re-
connect with his live-action ex-
wife Edie (Cheryl Hines, "Curb
Your Enthusiasm") and son Alan-
gulon (Johnny Pemberton, "21
Jump Street," 2012).
The juxtaposition of the two
worlds is utter perfection. Rip-
pling muscles aside, the hulking
Zorn is rather hapless in his vari-
ous misfires as he tries to be a
good father to his estranged son,
contends with Edie's mild-man-
nered fiancé, Craig (Tim Mead-
ows, "Mean Girls," 2004), and
navigates suburbia wearing furry
underpants and a giant sword —
even with an office-appropriate
shirt and tie. Full disclosure, I
snort-laughed at least twice
watching the trailer, so that's a
winning endorsement all on its
own. "Son of Zorn" premieres
Sunday, Sept. 11, on Fox.
If you're more into sci-fi drama,
turn to NBC. "Timeless" pulls view-
ers back to pivotal moments in his-
tory as an unlikely trio — Lucy (Ab-
igail Spencer, "True Detective"),
Wyatt (Matt Lanter, "90210") and
Rufus (Malcolm Barrett "Better Off
Ted") — travels through time in
pursuit of Garcia Flynn (Goran Vis-
njic, "ER"), a master criminal bent
on altering the past by way of a
stolen time machine.
As is ever the time-traveling di-
lemma, our heroes must make ev-
ery effort not to do anything that
will affect the way things play out
in the future. Unfortunately,
they're dealing with someone
who has set out to do exactly that:
Flynn plans on destroying Ameri-
ca by unraveling the past. Some
events depicted are the Hinden-
burg disaster, the Alamo, World
War II-era Germany and the first
United States moon landing. Look
for "Timeless" starting Monday,
Oct. 3, on NBC.
If none of this piques your in-
terest, there's plenty more to
choose from. This is a mere smat-
tering of the new shows that will
touch down very soon. Keep your
eyes open for these pilots and
many more as the 2016 fall sea-
son kicks off.
