TV Media Weekly | September 3 - 9, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Judge Joe Brown often talks about having people fined and arrested for any kind of contempt or disre- spect in the "courtroom." Does the show actually have the authority to do this, or is it just the expected staging of the series? A: As you suspect, Judge Joe Brown's threats of contempt charges are empty. He and his various court-show colleagues can't charge someone with con- tempt of court, because they're not in court. The "Judge Judys," "Judge Joe Browns" and "People's Courts" of the TV world are actually per- forming arbitration, not litigation. Arbitration is a process whereby people agree to let a third party rule on a dispute. The arbitrator has no legal authority beyond the contract signed between the peo- ple involved. So Brown is actually arbitrat- ing between the "defendant" and "plaintiff" on his show, not delivering a legal ruling. That said, the arbitration is binding: Part of the contract people sign to be on court shows generally states that they must abide by the decision, or else be in breach of contract — that's pretty much the extent of the punishment power vested in old Joe. I should point out here that the "judges" on TV are not amateurs chosen only for their charm or looks (indeed, some are said to have neither) — most of them are real legal professionals of some kind. Judge Joe Brown, for example, is an actual judge. Brown has recently become fa- miliar with the concept of con- tempt of court, but from the other side of the bench: last year he served five days in jail for con- tempt. The infraction occurred a year earlier, when he was serving as a mother's legal representative in a child-support case (pro bono, I should point out, and reportedly for a stranger — "a woman in need," he told ABC News). A craft brewing revolution has been sweeping across the country, and even folks who don't drink the stuff have to appreciate the passion that brewers are putting into their craft. It's not just new brews that are getting people excited, though. Some of the world's oldest breweries in Europe have been witnessing an explo- sion in the popularity of their time-tested beverages as peo- ple wake up to the endless vari- eties of beers that are available. What better to pair with all these tasty suds than the best American burgers and barbe- cue? At least that's chef Mi- chael Symon's philosophy. The Iron Chef is touring around the country looking for the best burgers and "'Que" that cities have to offer, as well as the best beer that he can find to wash it all down in the latest season of "Burgers, Brew & 'Que," premiering Friday, Sept. 9, on Food Network. The premiere finds the chef starting out his summer road trip in New York City at his fa- vorite burger joint, where he meets up with former NFL star Michael Strahan for some award-winning burgers. As they set out to explore the Big Apple, they try out St. Louis- style ribs, pizza topped with pastrami, and succulent meat- ball sliders — all washed down with a nice, cold beer. Each week, Symon visits an- other city and hangs out with another friend. In the next epi- sode, airing Friday, Sept. 16, he hangs out with musician Nick Lachey in Philadelphia, a city with a reputation for great beers. They pair the seemingly endless selection of local and European brews with a burger from fellow "The Next Iron Chef" winner Jose Garces, and with authentic German smoked sausages made with just the right amount of smoke. Mouthwatering? You bet. Over the course of the season, our host pairs up with actor An- thony Anderson ("Black-ish") and chef Mario Batali, visiting Chicago and northern Michi- gan, respectively, and feasting on smoked fish, olive burgers and fantastic pork — all washed down with a perfectly paired beer, of course.
