Dozens of arrests have been made for disor- derly conduct, burglary and other offenses in the Sherman Park neigh- borhood since Saturday, police reported. On the first night of violence, six businesses were burned, four officers were injured, members of the public were hurt, police squads destroyed and 48 separate incidents of shots fired were detected by the police Shot Spotter system. The officer who shot Sylville K. Smith on Saturday that triggered the outbreak has been taken off patrol while the state investigates the shooting. Smith has a lengthy arrest record and police say the gun he was carrying was stolen in Waukesha County along with 500 rounds of ammunition. It had 23 rounds in it at the time of the shooting, Mayor Tom Barrett said. As of Wednesday's Post deadline, the body-worn camera video taken by the officer has not been released, but Barrett said the still photo he saw showed "without question that he had a gun in his hand." Community members called for release of the video, but Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said the release is a balancing act of the officer's rights and the public's right to know. "This is a balancing act and we are going to try to do the very best in Milwaukee to get the balancing act right," Flynn said on Sunday.
