Andrew Zimmern, though, has an even better source that he uses to find the best culi- nary spots in town: the locals. The chef who's best known for "Bizarre Foods," in which he's spent years traveling to every cor- ner of the planet to try out some of the weirdest and most out- there foods available, is now turn- ing his attention to checking out some of the hidden hunger-bust- ing gems in cities all around the world. "Andrew Zimmern's Driven by Food," premiering Tuesday, Aug. 16, on Travel Channel, follows the "Bizarre Foods" host as he travels to cities all around the world. As is often the case for travelers, the first local that he spends any time with is the taxi driver — who bet- ter to ask about the city's fare? Whether it's a rickshaw driver in Hyderabad, India, or a cabbie in Nashville, Tennessee, Zimmern grills the drivers with one burn- ing question: where are the best places to eat the local specialties that the tourists don't know about? In the premiere, he lands in beautiful Rio de Janeiro. Of course, our host checks out all of the incredible sights the city has to offer: the famous Christ the Re- deemer, the wild nightclub scene and, of course, the world-famous beaches and ocean views. When it's time to eat, though, Zimmern gets away from "main street" and puts his fate in the hands of the city's cab drivers. He gets to try some of the best Bra- zilian barbecue, and later sinks his teeth into some of the best seafood he's ever had. And that's just the premiere. He'll be visiting a different city in every episode, some close to home and others far-flung, including Berlin, Chica- go, Bangkok and London. At every stop, he'll be putting his culinary fate in the hands of the cab driv- ers, always using his characteris- tically wry humor to make things entertaining for those of us fol- lowing along at home.
