MILWAUKEE — Familiar names and faces will assume a number of partisan positions within Milwaukee County, based on results from the small percent- age of voters who went to the polls Tuesday. According to data from the Milwaukee County Election Commission, 19.73 per- cent of the county's eligible voters cast ballots. With the presidential election on this fall's primary ballot, voter turnout is expected to be significantly higher in November. In a case of déjà vu, U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore handily beat her opponent, Gary George, in a Democratic primary in the 4th District. It was the second consecutive time Moore was able to fend off George. Moore garnered 55,093 votes, or 85 per- cent, while George received exactly 10,000 votes, based on unofficial election night results. Another notable face-off leading up to the primary was between Democratic state Sen. Lena Taylor, who defended her seat against challenger and current state Rep. Mandela Barnes. Based on prelimi- nary data, Taylor received 11,420 votes, or 60 percent of those cast. Results from other county races, all on the Democrat ticket: ■ LaTonya Johnson bested opponents Thomas Harris and Michael Bonds in the race for the 6th Assembly District race. Johnson received 60 percent of the votes cast. Nikiya Harris Dodd, who currently holds the seat, did not seek re-election. ■ Incumbent JoCasta Zamarripa beat out opponent Laura Manriquez in the 8th Assembly District race. Zamarripa received 64 percent of the votes. ■ Incumbent Josh Zepnick narrowly defeated opponent Marisabel Cabrera in the 9th state Assembly District race. He garnered 53 percent of the vote total. ■ Former state Rep. Jason Fields is retur ning to his for mer 11th state Assembly District seat. Fields received 58 percent of the vote total against chal- lenger Darrol Gibson. Mandela Barnes, the current seat holder, relinquished his post to run against Lena Taylor. ■ Incumbent Leon Young held his 16th state Assembly District seat with 49 per- cent of the votes cast. He beat challengers Brandy Bond, Edgar Lin and Stephen Jansen. ■ David Crowley won a three-person race for the 17th Assembly race with 56 percent of votes cast, beating out oppo- nents Kim Bur ns and Marcus Hart. Incumbent LaTonya Johnson relin- quished her seat to run for state senate. ■ Incumbent Christine Sinicki held onto her seat, besting opponent Julie Meyer with a 60-percent margin. — Dave Fidlin, Special to the Post 2 • Milwaukee County Post • August 12, 2016 Incumbents win big in Tuesday partisan primaries in Milwaukee County Volume 22, issue number 32 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S. Moore easily defeats Gary George for second straight time MILWAUKEE — A new study published this month by a Children's Hospital of Wisconsin doctor in JAMA Pediatrics found that families should not be worried if a child's concussion symptoms return once resuming day-to-day activities. "Activity-Related Symptom Exacer- bations After Pediatric Concussion" was co- authored by Danny Thomas, M.D., M.P.H., a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The study supports research Thomas published last year that concluded that lim- iting the amount of rest an adolescent has after concussion may help them return to normal activities sooner. His newest paper found that an increased risk for a symptom spike after a mild con- cussion was associated with an abrupt increase in mental activity, such as return- ing to school and extracurricular activities, from one day to the next. "The key implications for clinicians is that modest physical and mental activity did not worsen symptoms and that return- ing to school may cause an increase in symptoms, but this should not be seen as a setback in recovery," Thomas said. However, Thomas advises that high-risk activities like football and tree climbing should wait until after children have recov- ered from concussion.
