High School Football Practice Has Started Provided By: Kevin Carver High school football practice has started. We caught up with Chase as they practiced last week. OUTDOOR TRUTHS I had heard of others catching two fi sh on the same bait before, but I had never done it or even witnessed it. All that changed the other day. It was a beautiful, comfort- able, and even cool August morning on the river. It had been several weeks since I had taken this same trip. I was excited about throwing my little top water torpedo at some smallmouth. My excitement was justifi ed by the number of fi sh we caught during the fi rst three hours of daylight. Nothing big, but lots of action. I made one cast into a small pocket when it happened. The water boiled. I waited until I felt it pull, and I set the hook on not one but two smallmouth. After several minutes of fi ghting the fi sh and the current, I landed both. One was fi fteen inches long and the other thirteen. I'm glad there was a witness there to verify my fi sh tale. While sometimes I may not get what I ask for, on this day I received more that I asked for. When my son was around eleven years old he was riding with me in my truck. He began to run his fi ngers through the coins in my ashtray. I watched him and wondered what was going through his mind. I determined that eventually he was going to ask me if he could have the change. I prepared myself for a special father and son moment. He would ask for the money and I would say, "Of course you can have that money. You're my son and I'm so proud of you and you can take it all and put it in your own jar." It was going to be a wonderful moment. And after a few more minutes he opened his mouth and said, "Dad, can I drive?" Did I hear him right? Did he ask if he could drive? What happened to the two dollars' worth of coins and our special mo- ment? I barked back at him, "No you can't drive!" He settled back down and never asked for the money. God taught me several things about Himself through this small episode. First of all, sometimes our prayers are not answered because the timing is not right. One day my son would be able to drive my truck but at eleven years old, the timing was wrong. Secondly, sometimes our prayers are not answered because we don't ask for what God wants to give us. If my son would have asked for the money in my ashtray, I would have gladly given it to him. Thirdly, sometimes our prayers are not answered because God wants to give us more than what we ask for. My ashtray was full. There was not a lot of money in it, but it was all I had. And if I was willing to give my son all I had, what is God willing to give me above just what I ask for? Two smallmouth on one plug! That was more than I could have ever asked for. But I'm glad that sometimes God does just that. None of the victims were wearing a life jacket. "Anyone who is in or near water should wear a life jacket," said Maj. Chris Huebner of the Wildlife Resources Commission. "It's a simple thing to do and it can absolutely mean the difference between life and death." North Carolina requires anyone younger than 13 to wear an appropriate life vest when on a recreational vessel. Anyone riding a personal watercraft or being towed by one must also wear an appropriate life vest. Both North Carolina and federal regulations state that a personal fl oatation device in good condition and of appropriate size should be accessible for each person onboard a recreational vehicle. "It's important to put on your life jacket before you enter the water," said Huebner. "In dire situations, there often isn't time to grab a life vest and put it on properly. It can it save your life and can help you assist others who may be in danger." For more information on safe recreational boating or to enroll in a free boating education course by the N.C. Last week, practice began for Chase, R-S Central, East Rutherford and Thomas Jefferson. All four school have around 30-35 on varsity this season. So, depth is a concern for all four schools this season. A number of players could play both ways for all four teams. The fi rst month could be troublesome with the heat and humidity as bad as it is right now. I also believe that all four schools will be a little different this season than in the recent past, just because of the challenges each team faces. That could set up for more exciting games to come. Scrimmages are this week, with week one of the season beginning the following week. East Rutherford is without four key guys including Malik Hamrick (injury). East Rutherford has a whole new look to their line play since Jadacus Logan moved away. The Cavs are young, but they do have some speed and athleticism. Young, Cameron Simmons is the new East quarterback. R-S Central has similar issues, but they do return eight offensive and seven defensive starters. Central does have some decent size on the line and experience all around. They also have a new, young quarterback in Jayden Waddell to get the start. "There are a couple of spots that we need to grow up at and fast," R-S Central Coach Mike Cheek said. "Overall I want us to enjoy the season and just play hard every down of every week." Chase also returns a number of guys back to the varsity ranks. The Trojans are defensively in pretty good shape, but they are hoping a to create offense with Tyreece McSwain now the starter at QB. Blocking was a problem at times last year and they know where the game really starts for them on that side of the ball. "Linemen will be a big determination of our success," Chase Head Football Coach Daniel Bailey said. "We have to do better things on offense and the kids are excited about what we need to do in order to get it done." Thomas Jefferson will fi eld a varsity and Junior varsity squad this season. So far in the Cash era, the Gryphons have never won less than six games. This year, relying on their line play will be extremely key since they have the most experience from what is back. The Gryphons won't be as speedy as the previous three seasons, but if the blocking is good, they should still be able to move the ball. And they also won't start the season on August 19th since Peculiar Generation will not be able to fi eld a team this season. Next week, we will preview all three high school football games that are on tap for a week one start. As for Chesnee, they have a number of skill players back, but their experience on the line is limited. They went 4-7 overall, but all four wins came in region play. Just 17 of the 36 young men who played on last year's team return. Who would have thought, but the Owls are still alive for the Pettit Cup? The Owls sure have caught fi re in the second half of the season as they went 18-9. They also have made the Coastal Plain League playoffs. As the #2 seed in the West, Forest City hosted the #3 seed in the West on Wednesday (8/10/16). Should they win, they play in the divisional fi nals on Friday (8/12/16). If they win both games, then they play three-games series from August 14-16 to decide the Pettit Cup. Forest City has won the Pettit Cup twice, but not since 2010. The Owls have six of their last seven games and their fi nding a way to only win, but to win close games as well. Apparently, they did have something to prove. Patiently, Forest City climbed back into the race and made the playoffs. Give credit where credit is due. The Owls never gave up and now a postseason run is possible.
