Some days, I feel like I know everyone in
harrisburg.
My wife jokes that our weekly excursions
to the broad Street Market are one-part
shopping, two-parts social—that we have
to budget in several extra hours just to
make it from the entryway of the stone
building to the produce stand at the rear
of the brick building.
I find this to be one of the most enjoyable
parts of life in the city—chance meetings
with friends, acquaintances and even
strangers and the conversations that
result from them.
then certain events occur, and I feel
exactly the opposite—like I know hardly
anyone. Sometimes, these events are
tragic, like a recent community meeting
held after the death of Steve esworthy.
I looked around the crowded room at
Second City Church, at all the concerned
faces, and was surprised at how many
people I didn't recognize.
Most times, though, these events are
joyous: the various celebrations, outdoor
activities and neighborhood gatherings
that are a big part of summertime in the
city. For instance, I always see new faces
at National Night out, which takes place
this month on Aug. 2.
Years ago, National Night out began
as a safety measure, a way to "reclaim
the night." It since has morphed into
something greater—a chance for
neighbors to meet and bond over the
things they share by living near one
another. If you've never attended your
local event, I highly recommend it, as it
will make you feel better about the little
patch of land you call home.
otherwise, I hope you enjoy all the news,
opinion and features in this month's issue,
including our special focus on "back to
school." I'm especially excited about
Diane McCormick's story that highlights
the many companies that are choosing to
move into harrisburg to be closer to the
city's amenities, as well as to the rapidly
growing networks of people, businesses
and organizations here. Well, harrisburg,
I guess our secret is out.
