LOCAL LOCAL LOCAL BUY Articles By: Allison Flynn, Rutherford Weekly Articles By: Allison Flynn, Rutherford Weekly Ready, set, read! Summer Reading Programs begin around Rutherford County Libraries across Rutherford County will come together on June 21 at Crestview Park to host the first-ever Summer Reading Program Field Day. The field day is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., and will include a Zumba party, character parade, bubble fun, inflatables, hula hoop fun and more. "The theme this year for summer reading is 'On Your Mark, Get Set … Read,'" said Nicole Morse, children's librarian for Rutherford County Library. "I thought what goes better with sports and the first day of summer than field day." Morse, who promises the event will be an "action-packed three hours," is most excited to take the library outside of the four walls of a physical building. "The library is so much more than just books," she explained. Summer reading program participants at all three locations of the Rutherford County Library will be rewarded for their efforts, Morse added. "This year we will be keeping reading logs differently than in the past," she said. "Rather than having kids count the number of pages they've read, they will keep up with the amount of time they read each day." Kids won't just have to count time reading books either, she continued. "With growing subjects like magazines and graphic novels, kids can read those too," she said. "A half an hour is a half an hour, no matter what they are reading." Those minutes and hours will translate into raffle tickets, which can then be placed toward the prize they'd like to receive, Morse said. Children will get a bubble sheet to track their reading. Bubble sheets are available at the libraries through June 28, and will be available at Summer Reading Field Day as well. Summer Reading Programs around Rutherford County will be held as follows: Rutherford County Library - Programs will be held on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. at Mountains Branch; 12:30 p.m. at Haynes Branch; and 3:30 p.m. at the Main Branch. The hard work and dedication the 17 year old has put in is sure to show when she takes the stage for the 2016 Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant. As the reigning Miss Gastonia, Adcox will compete with other young women from across the state for not only the title of Miss North Carolina, but also for scholarships. "I am the youngest contestant this year," Adcox said. "I am competing against women who are 23 and in law school." Adcox's mom, Jeanie Webb, said that she never imagined her daughter would someday be in Miss North Carolina. "She was a Carolina Princess when she was 7, and she didn't want to take part in the pageant," Webb said. "But she did, and when she came off stage she said 'I've found where I need to be.'" An official state preliminary associated with the Miss America organization, the Miss North Carolina Organization isn't just about beauty, Adcox is quick to point out. "These girls are intelligent beyond what you'd believe," Adcox said of her competitors. Each contestant has to have a platform; Adcox's is Interact for Impact. The recent high school graduate took part in Project Unify at Chase High School, and will share the importance of treating those with special needs just as you would anyone else. Adcox also had to prepare a performance for the talent portion of the competition. She began working on a lyrical dance routine to the song "A Moment Like This" by Kelly Clarkson. "I've always want to dance to it," Adcox said. "It was always played at Sunburst Pageants when the winner was crowned …. it has always been a song that reminds me of happy moments." The community can help Adcox reach the happy moment of being a finalist for Miss North Carolina by voting for her online. "There is a People's Choice contest this year," Adcox explained. "We each had to complete a video about ourselves, which are on the Miss North Carolina Facebook page. My video is about Tyler White and how our stories parallel - just like him, I didn't wake up at 17 and decide I wanted to be in Miss North Carolina." The videos with the most likes will automatically make it into the top 11. Only likes on the original post will be counted. Adcox will travel to Raleigh for preliminary events June 22. During that time, she will be sequestered from family and friends, which is "a little intimidating." "I do better when I have time to reflect on things on my own," Adcox said of being alone for the pageant. "It's exciting, too. Take any summer camp and multiply it times 1,000 and that's what Miss North Carolina is." This year's pageant will not be televised, but the Miss Gastonia Pageant's Facebook page will post nightly updates on Adcox's journey at Miss North Carolina. Adult Summer Reading Program Adult Summer Reading Program Kids aren't the only ones who are being challenged to read this summer. The Rutherford County Library is hosting an Adult Summer Reading Program this year. The theme is "Exercise Your Mind. Read!" The program begins June 21 and ends on Aug. 9. This is the first time a summer reading program has been offered for adults, said Maria Davis, marketing & outreach coordinator. Participants will be given a challenge card. Each challenge that is completed will be signed off on by library staff. Each week those who have received a stamp will be entered into a raffle for weekly prizes. Those who complete their entire card will be entered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire. "The challenge card will not only provide activities for getting up and moving, but also a chance to read different books - which in some cases will cause you to step out of your normal genre." Challenge cards are available at the front desk of each of the three branches of the Rutherford County Library. Some of the weekly prizes include gift cards to local restaurants, massages and more. Prize sponsors are still being sought; if your business would like to take part, contact the library at 828-287-6118.
