Over- ton, 57, of Odon, Indiana, died May 22, 2016, in an Evans- ville hospital following medical com- plications. Overton continued his career as an photogra- pher when he joined the Washington newspaper's staff as a photographer in November 1994, when he moved back to the area with his family after living in Texas and California, where he had worked for 12 years for Olan Mills. He was a 1976 graduate of North Daviess High School and had attended Ivy Tech Community College. He was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Survivors include his par- ents, Fred Overton of Odon and Mary Janice Balogh of Evansville, son Zach (Emily) Overton of Terre Haute, daughter, Mandy (Evan) Smith of Coalmont; three grandchildren, Adalyn and Aven Smith and Easton Overton; two sisters, Shelly Overton of Evansville and Jane (Jake) Scott of Terre Haute. "He was talented, creative and a great colleague and friend," said Melody Brunson, Times Herald editor. "Kelly will always be part of the Times Herald family. Our hearts are heavy." – Washington Times Herald D avid Gilkey, an award- winning photojournal- ist for NPR, died June 5, 2016, along with his Afghan trans- lator after the Taliban ambushed them in southern Afghanistan, according to multiple news sources. He was 50. "We lost our friend and colleague David Gilkey, along with NPR's Afghan interpreter and fellow jour- nalist Zabihullah Tamanna, in Afghanistan," NPR wrote June 6 in a post on Facebook. "David's moving images went beyond the news to capture the struggles and perseverance of the people who lived it." Gilkey, of Portland, Oregon, studied journalism at Oregon State University. He began his career working for news- papers, including overseas assignments for Knight Ridder, according to his NPR biography. He worked for the Detroit Free Press until 2007, the year he joined NPR as a staff photographer and video edi- tor. He covered national as well as international news for the organization. In 2008, Gilkey presented a workshop on multimedia storytelling at the HSPA Foundation Newsroom Seminar in Indianapolis. In a news statement, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry offered his condolences. Gilkey "was more than a gifted photographer," Kerry said. "He was a gifted story- teller, who understood the power of imagery to enhanc- ing the power of understand- ing. He will be sorely missed." Gilkey received a number of awards throughout his jour- nalism career. In 2004, he was named Michigan Photographer of the Year by the Michigan Press Photographers Association. Three years later, Gilkey won a national Emmy for the video series "Band of Brothers," which focused on a group of Marines from Michigan in Iraq. And he worked on NPR's investiga- tion titled "Brain Wars: How the Military is Failing the Wounded," which received a George Polk Award in 2010. – Legacy.com Kelly F.
