COACH eyeweAr Do you love to be out- side exploring bugs, plants, and animals that live in the woods or even in your back- yard? If you said yes, you are a Jr. Naturalist! This program is designed for kids who have complet- ed the first, second or third grade and are interested in learning more about the great outdoors. You will get an up-close look at things found in nature: trees, fos- sils, birds, bugs and spiders. You'll even get a chance to go fishing. Take a gander at the fun, hands-on activities that we have in store for you at each session. Join us for some fun in the outdoors: Become a Jr. Naturalist. The sessions offered will cover the follow- ing materials: • Trees, Insects and Spi- ders: Do you like trees? Have you ever found a fos- sil? In this program you will identify trees common in In- diana during a nature walk. You can keep track of them in your Jr. Naturalist guide book by making leaf and bark rubbings. Have you noticed how many different kinds of bugs live in your backyard? Would you like to know more about them and even catch some of them? In this session we will make our very own bug box so you can start your own bug col- lection. We'll explore the dif- ferent orders of insects and discuss common bug mouth parts. Have you ever tried to eat like a bug? You will in this session. • Animals & Birds: Are you a bird watcher or watch animals? Birds and animals live all around us, but some- times we forget to take time to really see them and to ob- serve what they are doing. Sometimes wildlife is hard to see because it blends in with its surroundings. Dur- ing this session, you will learn how and why animals use camouflage and how an- imals need different types of habitats to survive. We'll al- so make bird feeders for our fine feathered friends. Wes- selman Nature Society Live Animal program will be there with an owl, turtle and other animals. The naturalist will speak about species facts, and habitats for each animal. • Fishing and Aquatic Life: Have you ever been fishing? Did you catch a fish? If you're not afraid of a wiggly worm and slimy fish, this is the Jr. Naturalist pro- gram for you! We will learn how to fish safely while wearing life vests and we'll identify some fish common in our area. While we're at it, we'll look for some other critters that love to live in or near the water. • Scientists need a place to keep their important re- search, so you will be re- ceiving a Jr. Naturalist tote to hold your papers and dis- coveries. All of that explor- ing will make you hungry, but don't worry, we'll have snacks, too. This program is sched- uled for Mondays in June beginning on June 13th from 10 to 12 p.m. at Horna- dy Park. The cost is $ 6 per session or $15 for all 4 ses- sions. Please call the Exten- sion Office at 812-354-6838 for a registration form. The sessions will be limited to 20 participants. The Jr. Naturalist Pro- gram is intended to be a fun, learning experience for your child. We will provide super- vision and a snack for your child. You are responsible for providing transportation to and from each session. You are welcomed to stay and be a volunteer for any of the sessions. Please let us know of any special needs or arrangements that need to be made for your child. Ad- vance notice would be appre- ciated. We look forward to meeting you and your child for this exciting program. Junior Naturalist program to begin June 13 Village Inn 242 S.
