A few months back, theburg was honored
to receive a "Friend of tourism" award
from the hershey-harrisburg regional
Visitors bureau.
Now, theburg isn't a glossy tourist or
lifestyle publication. We're a community
magazine focused like a laser on the
greater harrisburg area. our mission is not
to draw in tourists, but to tell the stories of
our region, which we try to do each month
in an attractive and engaging way.
I was delighted to know that theburg
contributes so much to our region, but,
as I said in my acceptance speech, I feel
that the real credit goes not to us, but to
the folks who own the restaurants, shops
and breweries; the artists who create; the
groups that host the events; the individuals
who do amazing things.
they're the ones who make our area so
special, who create a place that people
want to visit, possibly even stay. We just
share their stories—one bakery, one winery,
one festival at a time.
You'll find quite a few of these stories in
our June issue, which, coincidentally, has
an expanded focus on fun things to do in
and around harrisburg this summer. I know
it's a cliché, but—art, music, food, history—
there really is something for everyone.
Apart from summer fun, my favorite
story in this issue involves the spirit
of cooperation among a new breed of
harrisburg businesses. Instead of attacking
each other as competitors, these business
owners are working together for their
mutual benefit—and to the benefit of their
customers and the city.
Lastly, I would like to thank my colleague,
Paul barker, for his singular service to
theburg. If you're not familiar with Paul's
name, you may be familiar with his work.
For the past three years, he wrote most of
our long-form pieces, usually focused on a
public interest or community subject and,
more often than not, winning reporting
and writing awards for them.
theburg was fortunate to have Paul, who
contributed so much to our publication
and to harrisburg. he's now moving on to
a new phase of his life, the beginning of
a successful new career, I'm certain. his
character, his judgment and his incredible
talent will be missed.
