Ed lives in Baltimore where he is a home inspector. There is a child standing next to me we called Jim that was killed by the Viet Cong. (submitted) UW Milwaukee senior journalism lecturer Jessica McBride worked with two classes of journalism students to help find the missing photos for the VVMF Faces Project. They started working on the project in early March when the count was 63. The students not only found photos but wrote stories about the soldier photos they found as well as about their experiences in locating the photos. The count was down to 18 when Andrew and Laura Johnson visited the classes on April 27th. Andrew told the students details about the project, the life and death of his son, David, and about the high impact of com- munity newspaper journalism. (Dodge County Pionier file photo) Accuracy Of Names And Photos Information about the service members was provided by to the VVMF by the Department of Defense. The photos for the project were provided to the VVMF Faces project in good faith by various volunteer sources including family members, service members, vet- erans, teachers, WNA member newspapers and the public. Submitting Additional Photos In an effort to further preserve the legacy of those who sacri- ficed all in Vietnam, VVMF is committed to finding a photo to go with each of the more than 58,000 names on The Wall. The Wall of Faces allows family and friends to share memories, post pictures and connect with each other. Collected pictures will be used in the Ed- ucation Center at The Wall and can also be found on The Wall of Faces. If you have a picture of a loved one or fellow veteran whose name is on The Wall, please help the Memorial Fund honor these in- dividuals by putting a face with a name. Regardless of whether or not the Memorial Fund has a photo of the individual already, we en- courage you to submit it anyway. We are trying to collect as many photos of each individual as possible. You can submit additional photos by going to www.vvmf.org/wall-of-faces and search for their name in either the "Search The Wall" bar or by using the "Advanced Search". Once on on their page, simply click "Submit Photos". Each service member listed on the WALL can have multple photos associated with their name. There is no photo limit. To submit by mail, make a copy of your photo. VVMF does not want original photos and cannot be responsible for returning photos to donors. When having the photo copied, ask the photo professional to make it the highest quality possible, use a glossy finish and repro- duce the photo at an 8 x 10 size, if possible. Fill out the photo sub- mission form and package it up for mailing with the copy of the photo. When mailing, please indicate on the front of the envelope that a photo is enclosed. Mail to: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Attn: The Wall of Faces 1235 South Clark Street, Suite 910 Arlington, VA 22202 For more information about how to add a photograph to the col- lection, please contact VVMF at (202) 393-0090 or via email at vvmf@vvmf.org. UWM student Rachel Maidl interviews the brother of Willie Bedford, the final Wisconsin photo sought. (submitted) Each student in UW Milwaukee's Integrated Reporting classes was assigned to find two soldier photos and instructor Jessica McBride took the remaining seven. The students joined a statewide effort to find all 1161 photos. Students pored over cemetery burial records, checked phone directories and yearbooks, looked through veteran memorial sites and tracked down surviving family and friends in any way they could: phone calls, email messages, US Postal Service and in person. Some of the students even drove several hours to remote towns to meet with family members in order to get the photo and the story. From left to right: Ellen Malone, Justin Skubal, Bo Bayerl, Jamal Perry (back row), Molly Bryant, Rachel Maidl, Jordyn Noennig, Hunter Hanthorn (back row), Jessica McBride, Amber Bak (behind Mr. Johnson, barely visible), Mary Jo Contino Gabrielle Barriere, Tyler Nelson, Daniel Zielinski, Michael Holloway, Kenan Goyette, Andrew and Laura Johnson are in center holding promotional board for VVMF project.
