It's Fox's first dating series, and its freshman run is shaping up to be a drama-filled season of soap opera proportions. " Coupled" follows 12 women, each intelligent, young and some kind of "professional" (model/ac- tress, hopeless romantic, etc.), and each hoping to find the love of her life, or at least a little taste of fame, on the reality show. Fox has whisked these ladies away to a remote tropical paradise in the Caribbean islands and arranged for them to meet a host of hand- some, eligible bachelors. I know what you're thinking, and no, this is not a new concept. The whole island paradise/dating show thing has been done before — think "Temptation Island" or "Paradise Hotel" — and there's a definite scent of "The Bachelor" about this new show. But, of course, there are some interesting twists. First of all, the women make the first move. As they meet a series of attractive men, the women get to express interest, or not — the TV version of swip- ing right or left — and, when they've had their say about each specimen, the ball is in the men's court. At this point, the bachelors who didn't get any "right swipes" have to pack up and leave, but those who make it through must choose only two of the women who expressed interest in them to pursue fur- ther. What ensues is a series of awk- ward, drama-filled dates and en- counters that are sure to make for great TV. Isolated in their little is- land paradise, the women and men spend all their time together, fall in and out of love, trade part- ners and get their hearts broken. At the end of the series, as the promo spot says, "Either you'll go your separate ways, or you will leave here coupled." Adding to the drama is the fact that, unlike almost all other reali- ty competitions, these contes- tants are given cellphones, and viewers get to see the juicy texts that are sent between the contes- tants. The ability to text means the likelihood of misunderstand- ings and communication break- downs go way up, adding more fuel to the drama fire. Hosting this elaborate game of love is actor and author Ter- rence Jenkins, better known as Real talk
