TV Media Weekly | May 14 - 20, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Jimmy Kimmel sometimes sings on his late-night show. Has he ever done any Broad- way or released an album? A: Late-night fixture Jimmy Kim- mel has never been a professional singer, just an enthusiastic ama- teur. That said, he does owe much of his success to his voice. He got his start in radio, first in college at UNLV and Arizona State, and later professionally. He also met with a couple of ends on the radio, getting fired from more jobs than he quit. It was at one of the jobs he held on to, at Los Angeles's KROQ, where he met his future partner in TV, Adam Carolla, with whom he'd go on to create "The Man Show" and "Crank Yankers." That's not to say he doesn't know about music. Apart from his knowledge of it as a radio DJ, he also plays the bass clarinet (a de- lightfully geeky instrument for a TV star to play). And the producers of the American Music Awards had enough faith to hire him as host five times. He's been combining comedy and music since his earliest days. In an interview with Entertain- ment Weekly about a charity Christmas song he co-wrote with the pop band The Killers, he said he's been writing joke Christmas songs since his days on KROQ. But sadly no, he's never put them (or anything else) out as an al- bum. Some of the musical bits he's done for his show have had the sort of reach real pop stars dream of. His music video war with then-girlfriend and fellow comedian Sarah Silverman — in which she did a song claiming she was sleeping with film heartthrob Matt Damon, and Kimmel retorted with a song saying he was sleeping with Da- mon's friend and fellow heart- throb Ben Affleck — were mas- sive YouTube hits, together amassing 22 million views. It helped that Damon and Affleck were in on the joke. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. Per- sonal replies will not be provided. Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media A ndrew Zimmern has to be one of the most en- joyable chefs to watch on TV, and I think it's for a really weird reason: He al- most never cooks on-screen. Most folks who even dabble in watching food-based televi- sion will recognize the bald- headed traveler as the host of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods" and its later spinoffs "Bizarre Foods America" and "Bizarre Foods: Delicious Desti- nations." In fact, "Delicious Destina- tions" is currently in its third season, with new episodes air- ing Tuesday nights, and is bringing in its highest ratings yet — high enough that a fourth season has already been greenlit by the powers that be at Travel Channel. No matter which variation of "Bizarre Foods" he happens to be in, Zimmern's modus ope- randi is pretty consistent: he travels someplace and chows down on the local delicacies. Unlike the original "Bizarre Foods," Zimmern's not hunting down the weirdest, most out there dishes imaginable, though. No, in "Delicious Desti- nations" he's looking for the foods that define a location, whether it's the cheese steaks in Philly or the falafel in Tel Aviv. These are the not-to-be- missed foods for a city, and Zimmern's goal is to track down each food's origins, learn the best way to prepare it and then share with viewers where to get the delicious treat. It's ironic that the show that's made him most famous rarely ever features him cooking, since Zimmern has received numerous accolades for his skills as a chef. Fans of Food Network's "All Star Academy" got a taste of what he's capable of in that show's re- cently wrapped second season, where he occasionally had to step into the kitchen to show off his culinary skills. These days, though, Zimmern's career is in the TV business rather than the restaurant one; it's a ca- reer change that has earned him two James Beard Awards and a loyal fan following, not to men- tion widespread name recogni- tion around the world. A new episode of "Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations" airs Tuesday, May 17, on Travel.
