HOUSE FOR SALE BY OWNER Some students at East Rutherford High School spent Sunday afternoons from Christmas until late April working on the skills it would take to place them into a statewide competition. The East Rutherford Hunter Safety Team recently competed at the North Carolina Hunter Education Tournament, which is presented for student and team competitions in shotgun, archery, small bore rifl e and hunter skills. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, which presents the tournament, the purpose of the event is to promote the hunter education program and to offer young people a positive experience in all disciplines of the shooting sport and to experience and learn a variety of legal hunting methods. The team at East Rutherford was formed in 2011, said instructor Joyce Pruitt, who had previously coached a team when she taught in Henderson County. In order to try out for the team, students have to have taken part in the hunter safety course and be involved in the agriculture program. "We have tryouts in October, and to take part in competition students have to rank in the top 7 spots," Pruitt explained. To move forward to the state competition, students had to place within the top two spots at Southern Mountain District regional competition. After performing well there, the 10-member team began to practice twice a week at the Old Hickory Rifl e & Pistol Club in Bostic. Because someone from the club has to be on the range when students are there, many times practices fell on the weekends. And when the team wasn't practicing, Pruitt said, they were taking part in fundraisers to pay their way to the state competition. "We had a lot of hot dog and hamburger sales," she said. Prior to making the team, some hadn't shot other fi rearms. Cassidy Upton, the only female on the team this year, was hesitant to try something new, but now takes part in all of the shooting competitions. In addition to marksmanship, there is a written test component of competition, Pruitt said. "The test is wicked," she said. Students don't learn their scores on the test until they arrive for state competition. This year's team is made up of mostly underclassmen, and members are determined to repeat the successes of the past year again next year.
