And while volunteers perform a variety of duties, one in particular has a unique task. Dancer Bonnville is a poodle with his own offi cial ID badge who makes weekly visits to the medical center with owner and fellow volunteer Kerry Bonnville. For over a year their visits have brought smiles to patients, guests, staff and anyone else who encounters them. It is part of a program called Pet Therapy, and its effects are unmistakable in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices across America. "I've found that it's nearly impossible not to have your spirits lifted when you encounter Dancer and Kerry," said James Atkins, CEO of RRHS. "When I began here back in February I was thrilled to know that we offered this service in our facility. Dancer and Kerry bring joy, pure and simple." Trained through a program called Intermountain Therapy Animals, Dancer is the latest in a long line of dogs who have delivered certifi ed pet therapy to RRHS over the years. Dancer and Kerry make their way through hallways, to waiting areas, and to a limited number of patient care areas when they visit. Due to certain precautions, pet therapy dogs cannot enter the Intensive Care, Surgical or Birth Place units. On a recent visit, however, they were able to deliver comfort to David Brown and Carlene Adair in the surgery waiting area. The two smiled and laughed as they took turns petting Dancer. It was clear that Dancer's presence helped them both deal with anxiety that often accompanies a visit to the hospital. As they make their way to other units in the hospital, Dancer and Kerry will stop outside a patient's door and ask if it's a good time for a visit with Dancer. Many patients are immediately uplifted at the chance to pet a dog while going through their recovery. Often, staff on the units take advantage of Dancer and Kerry visiting as well. "Hospital workers have stressful jobs," Atkins added. "A day's events in the medical center can be physically and emotionally draining. I've witnessed that when our staff members take a moment for a quick visit with Dancer and Kerry, it improves their state of mind and leaves them happy. I'm proud that we can benefi t people's health and well-being with this service." PET THERAPY AT RUTHERFORD REGIONAL RAISES SPIRITS OF PATIENTS AND STAFF ALIKE Article Provided By: Matt Webber Administrative Director, Marketing and Business Development Rutherford Regional Health System (left to right) Kerry Bonnville, Volunteer; David Brown, Carlene Adair, CEO James Atkins, and Dancer in the surgery waiting room at RRHS. Dancer Bonnville, a Pet Therapy poodle at RRHS Dylan West and his dad Terry West recently delivered a beautiful sturdy dog house to PAWS. The dog house was made by members of Scout Troop 137 in Caroleen as part of Dylan's project to earn his Eagle Scout Badge. The troop also collected dog and cat food. "The dog house is very well built with a metal roof and fl ashing. PAWS has delivered over 25 dog houses to dogs who need shelter from the cold in winter and heat in summer. With donations such as this from Dylan and Boy Scout Troop 137, we can improve the lives of dogs in Rutherford County who must unfortunately live outdoors," said Janice Mitchell, a PAWS volunteer. "We are extremely grateful to Dylan and Troop 137." If anyone is interested in building or donating dog houses for pets in Rutherford County, please call PAWS at 1-800-422-7303.
