22 PIKE PUBLISHING BACKYARD ADVENTURES 2016 AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2016 ■ EVENT CALENDAR CONTINUED ON PAGE 27 ZOAR MOSQUITO FESTIVAL SWEET CORN FESTIVAL AUGUST 5 - 6 AUGUST 2 - 6 The Zoar Mosquito Fest is a festival like no other. They specialize in unique events and family fun the first weekend in August. Each year, the remote com- munity draws large crowds to its festi- val located on the Pike-Dubois County line about four miles east of Stendal on Old State Road 64. They feature a "stationary parade," a wiffleball tournament, three-legged races, an egg toss, live music and lots of catching up between old friends. The 44th Zoar Mosquito Fest begins on Friday, August 5 with opening ceremonies, fried and BBQ chicken dinners, followed by a Country music concert and the opening rounds of the Indiana Wiffleball championship. Saturday starts early, with breakfast being served from 6 a.m. and wiffleball starting early. During the morning will be registration for the quilt, flower and produce shows. The stationary parade begins at 1 p.m. True to Zoar's uniqueness, the pa- rade is staged through the parking lot. But instead of the parade meandering by, it doesn't move. Instead, spectators walk around the parade participants. In years past, it has featured every- thing from Santa to a German brass band. At 2 p.m. are the games, which typi- cally feature sack races, three-legged races, an egg toss and balloon toss. All day long they will have food, including homemade ice cream with 10 or more flavors, including one new flavor. The events will culminate with a Gospel concert and crowning of the wiffleball champions. Indiana is a part of the "Corn Belt," the area of the United States best known for its corn production. Accord- ing to the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, almost half of all the crops grown in the state are corn. Because of its high level of corn pro- duction, Indiana is also home to several festivals celebrating the sweet corn grown in the state. Each summer, the Oakland City Sweet Corn Festival pays homage to the home-grown product. This year, the festival is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 2, through Saturday, Aug. 6, at Wirth Park in Oakland City. This family-friendly festival is spon- sored by the Oakland City Lions Club and features a large parade, games, flea market, carnival rides, crafts, beauty pageant, live entertainment, fried chicken and pork chop dinners and, of course, corn on the cob.
