Godfrey received the honor for her more than 5,000 hours of service during Volunteer Rutherford's annual ceremony. Volunteer Rutherford is an affi liate of a statewide volunteer recognition program that has been part of the Governor's offi ce since 1979. It is funded in part by the Rutherford County Commissioners each year. This year's banquet, held in the evening for the fi rst time, had a theme based on the game show "The Price is Right." Nominees spun the wheel for prizes during "Volunteers are Priceless," and a few participants from the audience also took part. The "showcase" of the evening was the presentation of a $1,000 check to the Volunteer of the Year from United Way of Rutherford County. "We are always excited to be able to provide this donation in honor of the Volunteer of the Year," said Faye Hassell, executive director of United Way. "It's one way to celebrate the big difference volunteers are making to the quality of life here in Rutherford County. I want each of you to know you are all winners." Commissioner Eddie Holland was on hand to present certifi cates, plaques and handshakes to each of the honorees. The top Rutherford winner is sent to the state offi ce for consideration as a Medallion Award winner from the Governor's offi ce. Winners in each category were: - Lib Godfrey, Senior Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year for her work with Rutherford Hospital Auxiliary. - Sarah Daniel, Youth Volunteer, for her work with Rutherford Regional. - Bud Deck, Individual Volunteer, for his leadership of Welcome Table. - Susan Keith, Perseverance in Volunteerism, for her work with St. Francis Episcopal Church. - The McNair Foundation Mentors, represented by Bill Hardin, as Volunteer Group of the Year. - TD Bank, represented by Nichole Dubs, as Business Volunteer of the Year. Also honored for their volunteerism were Autumn Corbin, Spindale Library; David Leslie, Habitat ReStore; Jo Marcus, Pisgah Legal Services; Sean Bailey, Hospice of Rutherford County; Steve Ruppe, New Beginnings Soup Kitchen; Preston Byrd, Rutherford Housing Partnership; Shannon Skipper, NC Cooperative Extension; Lynn Brackett Wall, Feeding the Hungry of Rutherford County; Penny Watkins, Lake Lure Lions Club; Perry Wilson, Stainless Ministries; and Welcome Table volunteers. Coordinating the evening's program was Kim Freeman, president of Volunteer Rutherford and executive director of Habitat for Humanity. Other offi cers of Volunteer Rutherford are Cynthia Robbins of Cooperative Extension, secretary; and Janice Waugh of McNair Foundation, treasurer. Volunteer Rutherford is open to any local nonprofi t that wants to honor its volunteers. Affi liation with Volunteer Rutherford also provides networking and discussion opportunities for those in the nonprofi t fi eld.
