How Should I Treat an Ingrown Toenail? Q: I have an ingrown toenail that has become quite painful. Can I treat it myself, or do I need to see a doctor? A: You can treat most ingrown toenails at home. Here's how: •Soak your feet in warm water. Do this for 15 to 20 minutes three to four times a day. Soaking reduces swelling and relieves tenderness. •Place cotton or dental fl oss under your toenail. After each soaking, put fresh bits of cotton or waxed dental fl oss under the ingrown edge. This will help the nail grow above the skin edge. •Apply antibiotic cream. Put antibiotic ointment on the tender area and bandage the toe. •Choose sensible footwear. Consider wearing open-toed shoes or sandals until your toe feels better. •Take pain relievers. Over-the-counter pain re- lievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, oth- ers), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may help ease the toe pain. If home remedies don't help, your doctor may recommend using topical or oral antibiotics, especially if the toe is infected or at risk of be- coming infected. The doctor may also perform a procedure in the offi ce to either lift the nail away from the skin or to partially remove the nail. Source: Mayo Clinic Sunshine Parton and Leslie McNeil, both ninth graders at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, are Delegates to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, Mass., on June 25-27, 2016. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fi elds. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Both Sunshine and Leslie were nominated by Dr. Robert Darling, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent TJCA, a Challenge Foundation Academy which is ranked in the top 1% of US High Schools, based on their academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the fi eld of medicine. Headmaster Joe Maimone was pleased to hear about this great opportunity, "Both Sunshine and Leslie are excellent students here at TJCA-CFA, and I know that they will represent our school and our community extremely well in this prestigious program." During the three-day Congress, Sunshine and Leslie will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting- edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. "This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially," said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. "Focused, bright and determined students like Sunshine Parton and Leslie McNeil are our future and they deserve all the mentoring and guidance we can give them. " The Academy offers free services and programs to students who want to be physicians or go into medical science. Some of the services and programs the Academy offers are online social networks through which future doctors and medical scientists can communicate; opportunities for students to be guided and mentored by physicians and medical students; and communications for parents and students on college acceptance and fi nances, skills acquisition, internships, career guidance and more. The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists was founded on the belief that we must identify prospecting medical talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of this vital career. Based in Washington, D.C. and with offi ces in Boston, the Academy was founded as a nonpartisan, taxpaying institution to help address this crisis by working to identify, encourage and mentor students who wish to devote their lives to the service of humanity as physicians, medical scientists.
