FRANCIS — As she enters her second term as the mayor of St. Francis, CoryAnn St. Marie- Carls said she is optimistic and filled with a renewed sense of vigor. But the recently re-elected head of the lakefront city of near- ly 9,400 residents faced some rough waters this election season. The shrill-toned cam- paign was, for the most part, muted in a county that had such high-pro- file races as Milwaukee County executive and Milwaukee mayor. A month ago, St. Marie-Carls' elected counterparts — the aldermen and alder- women sitting on the Common Council — took a no-confidence vote against her when she requested a key card to the police station. The city's Police and Fire Commission alleged she lied about the sequence of events leading up to the request and called on her to resign. St. Marie-Carls was the only official candi- date in St. Francis' may- oral race this spring. But a write-in candi- date, former Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy Andy Wendt, also threw his hat in the ring after the state's election dead- line in early January. Wendt could not be reached for comment for this story to explain why he announced his candidacy after the filing deadline. In an open letter, penned in mid-March as the countdown to Election Day fast approached, he did touch on his bid for the city's top elected posi- tion. The letter included a statement Wendt "hope(d) to bring a positive change with a new perspective to St. Francis." In the end, St. Marie-Carls received 63 percent of the vote, securing a second four-year term as the city's mayor. She was offi- cially sworn in Tuesday at a Common Council meeting.
