We often retreat to a life of isolation and loneliness. This tendency to withdraw from others and the world around us will actually inhibit the grieving process and prolong the emotional pain. A grieving person sometimes will think that "curling up into a ball" will somehow make the pain go away, but instead of alleviating the sorrow, denial will only multiply our sadness. We must push ourselves toward an outward expression of how we are feeling. Experts tell us that a grieving person must fi nd some kind of emotional outlet. Some people fi nd it helpful to begin a journal of their daily journey, while others resort to writing poetry or stories of special times spent with loved ones. Joining a grief support group can also give us an avenue of expression. It really does not matter the type of outlet, each grieving person must fi nd a way to express what is going on inside of them. It is an amazing fact that many wonderful songs, poems and literary works have been composed as a direct result of a grieving person's personal expression. There perhaps is no greater time of clarity about the priorities of life than at the time of losing someone whom we love. We must fi nd some way to constructively express the sorrow of a broken heart. If we choose not to fi nd a way of expression, then our grief will only continue to compound. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow put it this way, "There is no grief like the grief that does not speak.
