FRANKLIN — The icon- ic mating dance and other habits of the American woodcock will be the high- light of the program Woodcocks and Wood Frogs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. It kicks off the birding season at the Wehr Nature Center, 9701 W. College Ave. Male woodcocks estab- lish territory by making squeaky "peent" calls and then spiraling upward in flight before acrobatically tumbling down and making a sound that Wisconsin con- servationist Aldo Leopold described as "a soft liquid warble that a March blue- bird might envy." Wehr is one of the few places in Milwaukee County to view the "sky dance." After a short presenta- tion on these unique shore- birds of the woods, partici- pants will take a sunset stroll to Wehr's oak savanna to witness the springtime ritual of the American woodcock. While waiting for the scene to unfold, par- ticipants will listen for wood frogs and other inhab- itants of Wehr's ephemeral ponds. Registration is required by today. The fee per person is $10; Milwaukee County residents, $7; Friends of Wehr members, $5. The $3 parking fee is in effect. Upcoming birding programs Birding programs at Wehr include workshops for beginners and expert-led walks. Birding Beyond the Feeder: Bird Identification will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon April 23. Registration is required by April 22. The fee per person is $15; Milwaukee County resi- dents, $12; and Friends of Wehr members, $10. Birding with Paul, led by expert Paul Boyer, will be offered for free from 7:30 a.m. May 1, May 8 and May 15. Additional information is available by calling Wehr at 414-425-8550. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • April 8, 2016 Woodcock 'sky dance' at Wehr Nature Center Volume 22, issue number 14 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S. Health Tip of the Week Registered Pharmacist Bob Stresing and the Serv-U Team 249152153 Prevent Nighttime Leg Cramps Muscle cramps are involuntary contractions of a muscle, and they are especially disturbing when they occur in the middle of the night. They can be caused by straining or overworking a muscle, dehydration, poor blood supply to the muscle or not getting enough dietary minerals such as potassium, magnesium or calcium. To ease the pain, gently stretch the muscle or walk around a bit to relax the cramp. Massaging the muscle or applying heat can also help relax it. To help prevent leg cramps, drink plenty of fluids; get adequate potassium, magnesium and calcium in your diet; gently stretch your muscles before bedtime; and loosen the sheets at the foot of your bed.
