2 SANTA CRUZ WOMAN | SPRING 2016 The women in this spring issue of SCW talk a lot about their intimate connection to the community we share, its geography and collective spirit, and how that informs their vision for the future. In one story, Diane Cooley talks of the mesmerizing beauty of riding her horse through the Pájaro hills as a child. In another, Gayle Ortiz shares her vision of Capitola, a home imprinted by childhood memories of floating long summer days on an inner tube in the Soquel Creek. Gina Castaneda, once a homeless teen, has received national attention for Aztecas Youth Soccer Academy, a Watsonville youth soccer program and Carmen Herrera-Mansir celebrates the legacy of her parents' entrepreneurial spirit in the El Pájaro Community Development Corp., a growing regional business incubator. Her parents had launched their own bakery in Mexico, which helped shape how she sees economic development. Nina Simon, who continues to transform the local museum community, asks us to participate in the power of art, culture and creativity. And, on the cover, we feature this year's executive director of the Santa Cruz Derby Girls Shamrock N. Roller, a.k.a. Regan Eymann, who invites us all to put on a pair of skates and join the growing community of local skaters building community within themselves. These quirky athletes manage to support local nonprofit organizations while circling the flat track toward the championships. We hope you are inspired.
