By MATT MASTERSON Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — There's a new Republican frontrunner heading into Wisconsin's presidential primary. With less than a week before next Tuesday's vote, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has overtaken billionaire Donald Trump as the favorite to win the state, according to a Marquette Law School Poll released Wednesday. Cruz was supported by 40 percent of like- ly voters compared to 30 percent who sup- ported Trump. In last month's poll, Trump enjoyed a 10- point lead over Marco Rubio — who has since dropped from the race — and an 11- point lead over Cruz. Ohio Gov. John Kasich scored just 8 percent in that poll, but is now up to 21 percent, according to Wednesday's results. Candidates from both parties spent much of the last week making campaign stops across Wisconsin in advance of Tuesday's primary election. Cruz also scored an endorsement from Gov. Scott Walker Tuesday, but pollsters said that announcement came after they had con- cluded this round of polling. On the Democratic side, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders put additional space between himself and Hillary Clinton, extending his lead to 4 points over the former secretary of state with a 49- to 45-point edge. Sanders held just a 1-point lead over Clinton in February's poll. In a potential head-to-head presidential matchup, the poll found Clinton trails Kasich by 9 points, but ties with Cruz and leads Trump by 10 points. Sanders, on the other hand, leads all GOP candidates — besting Kasich by 2 points, Cruz by 13 and Trump by 19. Despite that, Democratic voters seem to increasingly believe Clinton will win the party's nomination. Seventy-seven percent of Democratic respondents feel Clinton will be the nominee, compared to just 19 percent who believe Sanders can win. Last month, 60 percent of similar respon- dents felt Clinton would win, with 33 percent choosing Sanders. Cruz and Trump have also been engaged in a nasty, personal battle that reached a high point last week when Cruz accused Trump and ''his henchmen'' of stoking false rumors that he'd cheated on his wife. Among Wisconsin races, Justice Rebecca Bradley built her lead over JoAnn Kloppenburg up to 41-36 in the race for state Supreme Court, while Democrat Russ Feingold leads incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson 47-42. In last month's poll, Bradley held just a 1- point edge among registered voters over Kloppenburg, while Feingold saw his lead drop from the 49 percent to 37 percent advan- tage he held in February. Just under 50 percent of respondents also believe the U.S. Senate should hold hearings and vote this year on Merrick Garland — President Barack Obama's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court — while 41 percent said they should wait until 2017. The poll was conducted from March 24 to 28. The full sample includes 1,405 registered voters interviewed by cell phone or landline, with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points.
