there are many elements to a healthy city:
responsible governance, a good education
system, a thriving commercial sector.
I would add to that list a vibrant arts
community.
visual artists, performing artists and
musicians have helped revive many troubled
American cities, and harrisburg is no
exception.
Look around the city, even the suburbs. Art
is everywhere.
there are new murals uptown, in Midtown
and on Allison hill. Art is in our coffee shops,
our bars, our restaurants. there's just a
smattering of dedicated art galleries in our
area, but art is hiding in plain sight on our
streets, in our stores, our cafés.
In addition, there are more and more places
that feature the performing arts. gamut's
new theater is magnificent, and it wasn't
long ago that harrisburg lacked such
tremendous venues as river City, h*MAC and
the Millworks. over the past year, Zeroday
brewing has become another great venue to
hear local bands, and, every month, 3rd in the
burg continues to grow.
but why am I chatting up the arts? Well,
because it's April and, each April, theburg
features a special focus on local arts (yes,
even more stories than usual).
So, this month, enjoy our expanded coverage
and perhaps make it a point to experience at
least one local art event. Check out a band, a
play, an exhibit. take in something different,
something outside your normal boundaries.
If you want to go the extra step, consider
making a donation to an arts group such as
gamut (new theater), Jump Street (many
programs) or Sprocket Mural Works (murals,
of course). there are many other groups
and causes to choose from, including the
relocation of the Mulberry Street bridge
Murals, for which there's a fundraiser this
month ("Music for Murals").
As harrisburg has come back, so has our
arts community. or maybe it's the other way
around. the two proceed together, as one is
a sign of health in the other.
