The 16 scholarships were awarded to students from Daviess, Martin, and Pike Counties who are at- tending an accredited edu- cational institution in pur- suit of a career in the field of healthcare, with a poten- tial for pursuing a career that fulfills a local com- munity need. Some items of interest will include the Jazz Band playing the charts with which they won a gold rating at ISSMA Jazz Festival. The Winter Percussion will be performing their piece with which they placed fifth in the state. The Concert Band is play- ing their silver rating music from the ISSMA Concert Festival, plus plenty of new music. The culminating perfor- mance will be the Swing Choir performing with the high school concert band. "We are joining forces to perform a piece called "Sleep" by Eric Whitacre. It probably contends as one of the most gorgeous pieces either of the groups has performed to date, so what better way to premiere it to Pike County than through a joined performance of the choir and band. As a result, the performance will take place in the high school gym to accommodate both space for the groups and seating for the audience. Nobody in Pike County will want to miss this performance," said Band Director John Miller. Also, the Pike Central band program has been entered into a competition. The band posted a video on a Web site representing the concept "Music is Life." The video that receives the most votes will win three new in- struments including a tuba, euphonium, and french horn plus $1,000. "Our program would greatly benefit from the prize. It takes approximately 30 seconds to vote for the video. In order to do so, vot- ers will need to go to www. nemc.com. From there, the voter needs to find the link to the "Music is Life" com- petition. Find the band di- rector's name, John Miller, and click vote.
