TV Media Weekly | March 19 - 25, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I would like to know if "Hotel Hell" and "Melissa & Joey" will return. Also, what about "The Night Shift"? A: First of all, let me congratu- late you on your diverse taste in TV shows. Now let me give you a ma- jority of good news: "Hotel Hell" and "The Night Shift" are both re- turning soon. Sadly, though, we've seen the last of "Melissa & Joey." After a very long hiatus, "Hotel Hell" is due to return in May. Host/ chef/head profanity distributor Gordon Ramsay said so himself on his Twitter account, where he also confirmed that filming has already wrapped (so if you were hoping to nominate your own least favorite hotel, you're too late for season 3). "The Night Shift," a medical drama about former military medi- cal personnel running a hospital in Texas, was renewed for a third sea- son last spring. There's been no word yet on a return date. You're right to wonder about all three — they would normally have returned by now. "Hotel Hell" hasn't aired a new episode since 2014 — which is fair, since Ram- say has been busy filling up the rest of Fox's schedule with his various other hospitality-related reality shows. "The Night Shift" has yet to find a home on NBC's schedule — its most recent season premiered last February, in which case it's al- ready overdue, however its first season aired over the summer. That now seems like the most likely sce- nario for season 3. As for "Melissa & Joey," it also would have been back by now — its fourth season premiered in Oc- tober 2014 — had it been re- newed by its network, Freeform (formerly ABC Family). But it wasn't. "Now that the kids are grown and Mel and Joe have married and are looking toward starting a fami- ly, it seemed like a natural time to bring the series to a close," Free- form executive Karey Burke told TheWrap.com. "We are grateful to Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Law- rence and the whole cast and crew who worked so hard on this suc- cessful show." Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media K ids can make great cooks! If ever there was any doubt that they could handle knives, fry- ers and skillets with as much skill as an adult, kid-focused competition shows like "Mas- terChef Junior" have put those doubts to rest. But of course, the skills that these little culinary prodigies bring to the table couldn't possi- bly be comparable to actual pro- fessional chefs — could they? Enter "Man vs. Child: Chef Showdown," a culinary competi- tion on FYI that's entering its second season. Don't sweat it if you missed the premiere Thurs- day, March 17: its hour-long epi- sodes air every Thursday night. Those who watched the first season may recognize a lot of fa- miliar faces this time around. Several of the first season's child chefs are back, including Cloyce, 14; Estie, 8; Emmalee, 13; and Holden, 15. They're joined by newcomers Zion, 10; Isiah, 9; and Olivia, 11. In each episode, a professional chef enters the kitchen and faces off in a three-round culinary bat- tle against a team of the pint- sized amateurs. In true cooking competition style, the contes- tants are challenged to prepare a different dish in each round, with ingredients, themes and circum- stances set out before hand. After the first season, though, these pros might not be as cocky and confident. It's amazing to see how often they're beaten by the amateurs whose mastery of ingredients and flavors can put most adult home cooks to shame. To make matters even worse for the grownup challengers, af- ter a number of wins in the first season, the team of kids gained one of the most important skills to culinary success: confidence. They've proven that they have what it takes to beat the best, and after some time off to hone their skills even further, they're back with the taste of victory still fresh in their mouths. "The Next Food Network Star" runner-up Adam Gertler returns as host, and chefs Alia Zaine and Mike Isabella are back as fre- quent commentators and judges. As for guest judges this season, a tasty lineup of master chefs and successful restaurateurs is planned. The second of season of "Man vs. Child: Chef Showdown" airs Thursdays on FYI.
