The Compass Point build- ing was opened March 6, 2006, and approximately 45 residents moved from what was then the Wisconsin Masonic Home into the brand-new building. Several staff members remember the construction process and grand opening like it was yesterday. "It was back in 2003 that we first had the idea for a new catered assisted living building," said Compass Point Residential Health Care Coordinator Jodi Cigelske said. "A lot of work went into this project; a lot of planning, a lot of meetings, and questions about how we'd accomplish it. We had toured many facilities around Wisconsin, picked the best features, and built it exactly to our specifications with our residents' best interests in mind. I think we created a wonderful community." Mark Strautman, president and CEO, said the entire Three Pillars organization is proud of the milestone. Three Pillars celebrates a decade at Compass Point Submitted photo Three Pillars resident Bertie Kennedy, one of the original residents at Compass Point, says a few words reflecting on her residency at Three Pillars and sharing memories of mov- ing day a decade ago. Helping paralysis patients for 15 years and counting By Lauren Anderson Enterprise Staff WAUKESHA — From the excitement of a middle school student receiving a much-needed wheelchair to the hope inspired by new spinal cord research, the impact of the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation can be seen far and wide. What started as a golf out- ing benefit to help those with neurological disorders has since grown to include a host of community events aimed at finding a cure for paralysis and helping those affected by it. In 1998, a Slip N Slide inci- dent left Riesch, then a 19- year-old freshman at Marquette University, para- lyzed from the chest down. After his stay in the hospi- tal, Riesch and his family faced the mounting expens- es of retrofitting his home to accommodate his new wheelchair-bound life. "The expenses are just unbelievable," he said. "Not only are you dealing with the injury, but you're dealing with the emotional part and it doesn't just affect the person, it affects the whole family and the whole community." Following Riesch's injury, his friends hosted a golf out- ing for raising money to help cover those costs. After that, Riesch requested the event be expanded to help others in similar situations. And in 2001, the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation was born with a three-fold goal of funding medical research, providing scholar- ships to individuals with neurological disabilities or their families to offset costs for post-secondary educa- tion, and awarding charita- ble grants to help cover the costs of wheelchairs, van modifications, ramps and therapy equipment. In its 15 years of existence, the foun- dation has raised $4 million to that end. While the golf outing has remained a strong event — netting about $280,000 last year — the foundation's events have proliferated in recent years thanks to com- munity partnerships. Among the events is the "This is How We Roll" fashion show fundraiser, held on April 24 at the Brookfield Suites Hotel, which features models who showcase fashion on the run- way from their wheelchairs and a 5K run/walk/roll put on by Carroll University stu- dents in the fall. Over the years, various runners, bik- ers and triathletes have pledged their support for the foundation and competed in its honor. Riesch recognizes that he has been fortunate to afford equipment, to have the opportunity to return to col- lege — he graduated from Marquette in 2002 — and to secure a job, first at Northwestern Mutual and now at R&R Insurance. But he's also mindful of those who aren't so fortunate. "I'm able to accomplish a lot, but there are a lot of people not nearly in my posi- tion," he said. "... Even though this injury heals, it doesn't heal completely yet. It's always a struggle and it could be different struggle on a different day." Charitable grants and supporting research Since June 2015, the foun- dation has awarded more than $70,000 in charitable grants to help individuals suffering from paralysis and more than $40,000 in educa- tional scholarships. The foundation has awarded nearly $300,000 to researchers who are working to find a cure for paralysis. Because of the high cost associated with research, Riesch said the grants pro- vide doctors a chance to study new ideas that might otherwise go unexplored. A recent example of this is Marquette University researcher Murray Blackmore's study of the use of gene therapy involv- ing cancer genes to treat spinal cord injury. Blackmore was first award- ed $50,000 in seed funding from the BRPF to get his research off the ground and, recently, received $415,000 from the National Institutes of Health to advance it fur- ther. It's ideas like this that feed Riesch's hope for a cure. "Will there be a cure in my lifetime? I think there will be," Riesch said. "I hope it's in time for me to enjoy it ... but, if for some reason, a cure doesn't happen for me, I know there will be a cure sometime in the future. They're just learning too much and they've made so many more advancements." In the meantime, Riesch celebrates the more minor "cures" along the way that have helped him gain an increasing amount of inde- pendence — from iPads to voice-activated environmen- tal control systems to voice transcription technology. "It's just amazing what technology has done for me," he said. Email: landerson@conleynet.com
