Open From 1A There were 22 busi- nesses registered to take part in the event and Kroening expected between about 200 peo- ple to visit. She hopes to continue this format in the future. She was especially happy about the decision for partici- pating businesses to conduct demonstra- tions. Deciding on demonstrations Couples, children and joggers glossed over pamphlets that listed the diverse and intrigu- ing demonstrations offered. There were various samples of delicious food and drinks along with ses- sions to discuss insur- ance, pets, makeup or exercise tips. Artisan 179 had a crowd of people wait- ing to see a cooking demonstration and enjoying the ambience. Another popular one was at Silly Willyz, where kids made their own Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putty. There were multiple colors to choose from and kids were able to name their creations. Jackie Schoenholtz, owner of Silly Willyz, said she chose the putty for the event because it is the hottest product in the store. "We are looking for- ward to show people what we have to offer," she said. Schoenholtz also had trivia game and dice game demon- strations which would entertain a youngster or adult. Aiden Vorachack, 6, and his cousin Weston Wiegelman, 2, rolled and bounced a putty ball and stretched out shimmery strings of it. Their grandma, Sheri Wiegelman, looked on with a smile. "It is a nice night for this. The kids are excited about the horse ride," she said. Giddy up Fran Holloway of The Woman's Club of Pewaukee was happily chatting with her neighbor and fellow member Linda Kowalewski. The ladies relaxed on a red col- ored padded carriage as the two horses led the way. Hoof Beats Express provided both the carriage and the horses. Both women have attended the Positively Pewaukee events for years but when they heard about the horses they knew they had to get there early. Hoof Beats Express owner Mary Jane Swedberg enjoys par- ticipating in these events to see people experience the horses. "We have had new- borns to World War II vets on a ride," she said. Washington, D.C., is cele- brating Emancipation Day on April 15. Emancipation Day is a federal holiday, and is normally celebrated on April 16. Emancipation Day com- memorates the anniversary of the signing of the Com- pensated Emancipation Act, which President Abraham Lincoln signed into law on April 16, 1862. The act ended slavery in the District of Columbia. April 16 falls on a Saturday this year, and Emancipation Day will be celebrated on April 15. Do not use a federal holi- day as an excuse to wait to file your taxes. But if you do wait until late in the game to file your taxes you need to be organized, and ensure you have all the information you need. Most tax preparers will provide a questionnaire for you to complete in an effort to gather information and expedite the process. "I send out a basic ques- tionnaire for information gathering — about three pages," said Jim Glorioso of Glorioso's Tax Service in Oconomowoc. "It gets to be quite time-consuming with pieces of information." Glorioso said it is frustrat- ing when customers come to his office with most of what they need and think they're doing everyone a favor by getting a start on it. Glo- rioso said such a practice wastes a great deal of time for them and the tax prepar- er. Glorioso also said show- ing up with too much paper- work is better than showing up with too little paperwork. Marty Hartwig of Hartwig, Fredricks & Pelzek, LLP, a tax prepara- tion service in Pewaukee, is of a similar mindset. A questionnaire is available on the firm's website that customers can download and complete in advance of an appointment. Hartwig said he and his colleagues count on some showing up at the last minute to ensure an even workload. "If everyone arrived in the middle of February we'd have such a bubble," Hartwig said. "It would be hard to work through it. It Page 2A • FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY March 2016 Circulation Dept. To reach the Circulation Department call 542-2501 or go to www.gmtoday.com/wfhelp. Weekends: April 16 thru May 1, 2016 get inspired Prepare yourself before preparing your taxes Charles Auer/Freeman Staff Tax time is approaching. Planning ahead can avoid the last-minute rush and last- minute problems. Getting right information together early can save time gets to be a problem if they're showing up with less than a week to go — that's problematic." Keep in mind that most filers submit the long form with basic, itemized deductions. Typical docu- ments include W-2s, 1099s, mortgage interest documents, and some investment paperwork. Get kids on same page If you are not interest- ed in visiting a tax pre- parer, Glorioso said some tax preparation websites, such as TurboTax and others, are better than using nothing. Glorioso said the sites are typical- ly easy to use and are intuitive. Both Hartwig and Glo- rioso each offered a tax situation to keep in mind. "One that comes up a lot is a married couple, both having full-time jobs, and they often do not have enough taxes withheld and end up owing or getting a small refund," Hartwig said. "That can be difficult to explain, and it's frustrat- ing to explain to them when they get their tax return." Hartwig said the couple will likely have claimed married and one or two exemptions. Hartwig said less is withheld when claiming married versus single status. Glorioso said to be careful if you have col- lege-aged students who work and go to college and are your dependents. Be sure your children know you are claiming them as dependents, especially if you are pay- ing college tuition. Glorioso said to advise your children to keep copies of everything, and tell them to talk with you before filing a return of their own. Parents and students not being on the same page and communi- cating when filing taxes can net the student a few hundred dollars in extra cash while costing the parents several thou- sands in deductions or cash in their return. Thompson Square to play County Fair WAUKESHA — Don't forget your cowboy boots during this summer's Waukesha County Fair. Country duo Thompson Square will perform on the Miller Lite Main Stage on July 23. Band members Keifer and Shaw- na Thompson are international country music stars with chart-top- ping hits including "Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not," "If I Didn't Have You," and "Everything I Shouldn't Be Thinking About." All of the Fair's Miller Lite Main Stage shows are free with fair admission, while VIP and ELITE VIP up-front seating will also be available for each show. Thompson Square tickets go on sale March 15 on the fair website — ELITE VIP tickets will cost $75, and $15 for VIP. ELITE VIP tickets include fair admission, preferred parking, two drink tickets, and an assigned seat in the first three rows in front of the stage. VIP include a first-come, first- served seat in a designated area in front of the stage, but fair admis- sion is not included. The oldest fair in the state of Wis- consin will celebrate its 174th year this summer from July 20-24.
