Now in its 11th season, the series is coming off one of its best-ranked seasons in average total viewers, and it continues to pull in strong num- bers. It makes sense, then, to want to continue this success, but in a fresh new way. Enter "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders." The parent show's spinoff introduces fans to a new cast of characters who do every- thing in their power to solve crimes involving Americans on in- ternational soil. The series con- cept was introduced in a back- door pilot of "Criminal Minds" last April, and now, "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" is set to premiere Wednesday, March 16, on CBS. It's an interesting concept, and co-creator and executive produc- er Erica Messer explained what it's about and how it came to be at the Television Critics Associa- tion press tour in January. "There's a great big world out there, where Americans are trav- eling more than ever before. When we did the research and found that 68 million Americans leave the United States every year, our brains just started tick- ing. There's crime that happens to those Americans, and wouldn't it be amazing if there was a team of FBI heroes that could come save you?" That team of heroes is led by Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Gary Sinise ("Forrest Gump," 1994), who returns to the small screen for the first time since his starring turn in another long-running CBS police proce- dural, "CSI: NY." He has laid pretty low in the Hollywood sphere since "CSI: NY" went off the air in 2013, only lending his voice to "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014) as the narrator of the Cap- tain America exhibit at the Smith- sonian. Sinise plays FBI unit chief Jack Garrett in "Beyond Borders," and, according to Messer, he was the only person she ever saw playing the team's leader. "I remember saying to [execu- tive producer Mark Gordon] early on, 'I see this international team and Gary Sinise is the leader,'" Messer said at the TCA press tour. "And he said, 'What if Gary can't do it?' And I said, 'Yeah, I just think Gary Sinise is the leader.' But Gary is a hero onscreen and off, and it made sense." Feature this week
