FREE Internet Gateway with order Spring garden preparation is essential for healthy plants. Whether it's a vegetable or an ornamental garden, things done now will save you some headaches during the growing season. First, sharpen and sanitize all garden tools. Sharp tools work properly and there- fore cause less frustration while working in the garden. There is nothing like weeding with a dull hoe or digging with a dull shov- el to make life miserable. Also sharpened pruning tools allow you to make clean cuts that heal properly. Plus, it makes the job go faster, makes things less stressful, and helps alleviate sore muscles in both hands and shoulders. Gardening doesn't have to hurt. Sanitation, and not just knocking the old dirt off, is probably the most overlooked spring task that can give you the most ben- efits. Not only do clean tools work better but they help protect your plants. How so? Insect eggs and disease spores can over-winter on dirty tools. Therefore they can re-infect your plants this year with the same problems you had last year. This includes your tiller tines as well if you use one. A simple 10 percent bleach or alcohol solution will do the trick. Simply mix it in a spray bottle and spray everything down. This also includes containers. Dump out old dirt, rinse them clean and spray with solu- tion. Never re-use the old container soil because who knows what's hiding in there. All right, the tools, containers and equip- ment are ready to go. When you can finally get into your gardens there are some things that can be done to help bring life back into the soil. I recommend starting with a soil test to see what's up. Is there anything lacking? This doesn't have to be done every Time to wake up the garden See TIMM/Page 5 MICHAEL TIMM
