He inherited it, so to speak, from his older brother who handed it down when he went off to college. Sachse, now 52, said he would clean and squeegee store-front windows along in Detroit and in the sub- urbs. He'd knock on doors, ask for business, and come back every couple of weeks. His best months were in the summer, and he gradually expanded the business as he picked up more accounts. "It was really good money," he recalled. "I did it all though college. This was my life." Over time, he said, he added more cleaning serv- ices and employees. By the time he was in his 20s and had graduated from the University of Michigan, he had two offices and was employing as many as 50 people to wash windows and 30 people to clean houses. Along the way, he invested in an apartment com- plex and oversaw its construction.
