Book Review: 'Puns and Math' By Joseph Dillon Excuse my dear Aunt Sal- ly; she has a problem that is equal to, or greater than, most. Although her math skills are only a fraction of her issues, they are square- ly a negative factor in her un- derstanding of the world. If you got all the terrible jokes and puns in that last sentence, you will surely en- joy "Making Math Work," a series of real-world math- ematics books from The Creative Company, that are newly available at your Pike County Public Library. If you didn't appreciate the "by-the-numbers" style of humor, well, never fear, these books are written in an accessible style that will make it easy to understand on your own terms. Ok, I'll stop with the math puns. A f- ter all, I don't want this re- view to be seen as "improp- er." The bottom line is, "Mak- ing Math Work" is an ex- cellent series for those who wish to add to their under- standing of how math real- ly works. Adults who need to work out personal finances or who are building an addi- tion to their home will find this series useful and acces- sible. It's well indexed and the writing style is conver- sational plain English. Anybody who's complet- ed sixth grade should be able to grasp the content in this series independent- ly, without supervision. Ac- cordingly, I recommend it to middle and high school stu- dents who want to nail down practical application of the bewildering classroom math that they've skimmed for years. I predict that this brand- new series will be a hit with Pike County's growing homeschooling communi- ty. It's informal, direct and brief. The six-book series is shelved at Petersburg, but we'll send "Making Math Work" to any branch of the Pike County Public Library upon request. Whenever I consider the variables that this series ad- dresses, I know of no paral- lel. Ok, that's the last of the puns, I promise. Protractor. Joseph Dillon is the pun- prone Teen and Adult Pro- gram Coordinator at the Pike County Public Library.
