By Katherine Michalets Freeman Staff WAUKESHA — The rugs on display in Shabahang & Sons are more than decora- tive pieces for a home — they are handmade art suitable as heirlooms, said one of the family business' owners, Bruce Shabahang. Now that America has lift- ed embargoes against Iran, Persian rugs made in that country will once again be exported to the United States. Shabahang, whose family is from Iran, is excited to add to his gallery's diminishing supply of Persian rugs. "I'm glad they lifted the sanctions," he said. "They were hurting the people." A nuclear accord that was reached with Iran and imple- mented in January calls for the Middle Eastern country to dismantle parts of its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions that have negatively affected the nation's economy. Shabahang & Sons works with a broker to purchase rugs directly from weavers in Iran, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The weavers often have live in the country and have been hand-making the rugs for generations. Shabahang said his great- grandfather first started col- lecting Persian rugs and when his family moved to the United States, his father, Jalal, opened the rug store with his brothers, Mo, Bijan and Bahram, in 1982. "This is what we do. It's what we love. It's our pas- sion," he said. The family owns its store at 160 Kossow Road in Wauke- sha and another location at 601 E. Ogden Ave. in Milwau- kee. They also own a ware- house facility in Iran. Hand-weaving rugs is a dying art form, Shabahang said, and one which the sanc- tions also further hurt.
