Family politics: ABC is expand-
ing its stable of political thrillers.
"Scandal," created by Shonda
Rhimes, has been a critical and rat-
ings darling for the alphabet net-
work, and now a new drama from
one of that show's former writers is
about to join it on air. "The Family"
is scheduled for a special premiere
Thursday, March 3, on ABC, after
which it moves to Sunday nights.
Unlike "Scandal," and as the title
would suggest, "The Family" fo-
cuses on the deeper, more personal
side of politics.
Joan Allen ("The Bourne Ultima-
tum," 2007) stars as Claire Warren,
the mayor of Red Pines, Maine, and
matriarch of a picture-perfect poli-
tician's family.
After announcing her intention
to seek the state's governorship, a
wrench is thrown into their family
dynamic when her son, who went
missing a decade ago and was pre-
sumed dead, reappears. Liam
James ("The Way Way Back,"
2013) stars as Adam, back from
the dead and trying to reintegrate
into a family that's spent a decade
moving on. Suspicions soon begin
to emerge, though, that he may
not be who he says he is.
Alison Pill ("The Newsroom"),
Zach Gilford ("Friday Night
Lights") and Rupert Graves ("V for
Vendetta," 2005) round out the
rest of the Warren family. Andrew
McCarthy ("Weekend at Bernie's,"
1989) stars as the man who was
wrongfully put away for Adam's
murder, and Margot Bingham
("Boardwalk Empire") stars as the
cop who caught him.
Having a long-thought-dead
family member return would be a
defining event for any family, let
alone one in the middle of an im-
portant political campaign.
Southern friendship: Two best

scheme. What could possibly go
wrong? SundanceTV's next origi-
nal series premieres Wednesday,
March 2, and it's a bloody, deadly
and high-stakes six-episode romp
through the swamp.
Based on the novels by Joe R.
Lansdale and set in the late 1980s,
"Hap and Leonard" stars James
Purefoy ("The Following") and Mi-
chael Kenneth Williams ("12 Years
a Slave," 2013) as a pair of best
friends in East Texas who set out
on an adventure that soon turns
far bloodier than they could have
imagined. Much like the novels, it's
the relationship between the two
