parents' garage.
Colin Hanks ("Fargo") stars as
Matt and Heather's younger broth-

"Life in Pieces" also features a
cast of recurring characters that
include comedian Martin Mull
("Roseanne") as Joan's patient
and neighbor, Gary. "MADtv" al-
ums Jordan Peele and Stephnie
Weir frequent the series as well,
as does New Zealand native Rhys
Darby ("Flight of the Con-
chords"). Guest stars for the first
season include J.B. Smoove
("Curb Your Enthusiasm"), Martin
Starr ("Silicon Valley"), Alex Bor-
stein ("Family Guy") and Greg
Grunberg ("Heroes").
The comedy is the brainchild of
Justin Adler, who also serves as ex-
ecutive producer. With more than
20 years of experience in film and
television under his belt, Adler has
worked on shows for all of the four
major broadcast networks. Some
of his credits include developing
the pilots for "30 and Counting"
and "I'm With Stupid." He was a
co-executive producer of "Better
Off Ted" and "Sons & Daughters,"
and worked on "Less Than Per-
fect" and "Samantha Who?"
While promoting the series dur-
ing last year's Television Critics As-
sociation press tour, Adler claimed
that he was inspired by none other
than Bugs Bunny and the "Looney
Tunes" gang when he came up
with the concept for "Life in Piec-
es." The format of the classic ani-
mated series allows the telling of
multiple independent stories,
while still keeping continuity
throughout if desired — for exam-
ple, if a character were to get in-
jured in one short, he would have
bruises if he appeared in a later
storyline.
With a bevy of television and
streaming options and attention
spans at an all-time low, Adler may
be on to something. Not only are
the segments quick and easy to di-
gest, they also feel more natural as
family life goes on despite the hic-
cups and milestones along the
way.
So far, audiences have been
eating it up. Most episodes have
consistently attracted eight million
or more viewers, an impressive
feat these days.
