TV Media Weekly | February 13 - 19, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Can you please tell me when "The Americans" and "Tyrant" are returning to the FX channel? A: It looks like FX has you cov- ered straight through the sum- mer, if those are your shows. "The Americans" is slated to return March 16, with a 13-episode sea- son that will run into June, when "Tyrant" should be back. I say "should be" because while FX has been generous enough to offer a precise pre- miere date for "The Americans," it hasn't done so yet for "Tyrant." Both of its previous seasons had June premieres, though, so it's a safe bet Season 3 will as well. Though FX hasn't given "Ty- rant" a release date, it has an- nounced that this season will be only 10 episodes long (two short- er than last year). But that means you'll still have something new to watch right up to the end of the summer. For the colder months leading up to "Tyrant's" return, FX is of- fering some of its deepest Cold War intrigue yet in the "The Americans," which is set in the 1980s. Executive producer Joel Fields said that the events of this season tie in to Reagan's Star Wars defense initiative, which, unbeknownst to most people at the time, caused a lot of diplo- matic strife with the Soviets. "A lot of people refer to this ex- act period as one of the tensest in the Cold War," Fields told Enter- tainment Weekly. "Philip [Mat- thew Rhys, "Brothers & Sisters"] and Elizabeth [Keri Russell, "Fe- licity"] are going to be in the mid- dle of some of the most danger- ous operations that, interestingly, were not playing out in the head- lines but were happening behind the scenes and didn't come out until after the Cold War was over." A photo from the set of the new season also shows star Rus- sell in one of her most outland- ishly '80s outfits yet, so you have that to look forward to as well. Have a question? It brings people together like nothing else does. But in Bravo's latest cooking competition, it also turns people into dirty liars. The show is "Recipe for Deception," and it's currently airing Thursday evenings. Hosted by comedian Max Sil- vestri ("Don't Walk"), its ba- sic premise sounds pretty fa- miliar: two pairs of chefs square off in a face-to-face cooking battle, each using their own mystery ingredient, with the winner of each duel then battling the other win- ners for the distinction of be- ing named that episode's champion — not to mention walking away with a fat $10,000 prize. Simple, right? Not so fast. "Recipe of Deception" can be deceptive in its familiarity. That mystery ingredient that the chefs have to cook with? Yeah, they don't even know what it is! Luckily for the clueless con- testants, they're each told which mystery ingredient their opponent needs to be using, and each round of competition starts off with a classic game of "two truths and a lie." Each chef gets a chance to ask his or her opponent three questions about this secretive mystery in- gredient, and the opponent must answer two of them truthfully — but only two. With the judges — chefs Jonathan Waxman ("Top Chef Masters") and Chris Oh ("The Great Food Truck Race") — determining not only the entire dish's quality but also its use of the secret ingredient, figuring out what it could be before the clock runs out is a top priority for the contestants. There's even an element of espionage in the mix. If a chef loses his duel, that's not the end: in the third and final round, as the two previous winners go head to head, the two defeated chefs are given inside knowledge of the se- cret ingredients — knowl- edge that they can share for a slice of the $10,000 pie the winner gets. It's a classic cooking com- petition with a unique twist that makes it unlike anything else on television, at least when it comes to cooking shows.
