They said Samy Mohamed Hamzeh, 23, planned to shoot 30 people at a Masonic center in Milwaukee. Originally, he wanted to go to Israel in October to attack Israeli soldiers and citizens in the West Bank, but "family, financial and logistical" reasons thwarted that plan, according to an affidavit filed by the FBI. On Tuesday, federal prosecutors charged Hamzeh with unlawfully pos- sessing a machine gun and receiving and possessing firearms not registered to him. "My hat's off to the FBI, my hat's off to the acting U.S. attorney," Mayor Tom Barrett said at a news conference, revealing he found out about the "mas- sacre" plan on Tuesday afternoon. "I got the sense that this was a real threat," Barrett said. "They had every reason to believe this was a real threat." Acting U.S. Attorney Gregory J. Haanstad said in a statement, "Samy Mohamed Hamzeh devised a detailed plan to commit a mass shooting intend- ed to kill dozens of people.
