I'm often asked how (and why) theburg began.
And so I tell the story about two guys who
thought they could bring something a bit
different and a bit better to the harrisburg area.
to me, though, the most interesting thing is not
how theburg started, but what it's become.
back in 2008, sitting in a coffee shop, planning
things out, I never imagined that my small
community newspaper quickly would grow to
become a regional magazine with distribution
ranging from Mount Joy to Carlisle, from york
to Newport. Nor did I imagine that we'd produce
the type of publication that consistently wins
awards for our journalism, our illustration and
our design.
but we have been able to do this, largely
because of the talent we discovered here and
because of the profound support of the greater
harrisburg community.
this support comes in many forms. Sometimes,
it's financial—people and companies who
believe in theburg and our mission. Sometimes,
it's in-kind, most notably from our hundreds
of distribution partners who generously give
theburg a little space inside their restaurants,
cafés, bars, buildings, etc. And sometimes it's
moral, the thoughtful folks who take a minute
to tell me how much they like and appreciate
what we do.
We value all of your support and promise that,
as long as you continue to encourage and
back us, we'll continue to publish the highest
quality regional magazine that our abilities and
resources allow.
And, with that, welcome to our February
issue! this month, we take a moment (and a
few stories) to acknowledge and thank central
Pennsylvania's African-American community,
whose tremendous contributions often have
gone unrecognized.
otherwise, you'll find, as usual, a little of this,
a little of that. Many of our stories include a
business angle, since (as I've stated before
in this space) this region has such a dynamic
small business culture. And, if you'd like to join
the ranks of these gutsy entrepreneurs, several
local business owners share stories of how they
got started.
So, relax, get something comforting to drink
and begin your journey through our February
issue. It's wonderful having you with us for
another month.
