TV Media Weekly | January 16 - 22, 2016 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I saw the third Aladdin movie and recognized the voice of Sa'luk. Who is it? A: Playing Sa'luk was a bit of a switch for the late Jerry Orbach, who's better known for playing a cop than a robber. Sa'luk is one of the titular thieves in "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" (1996), the second sequel to modern Disney classic "Aladdin" (1992). However, Orbach is more often remembered as Det. Lennie Bris- coe, one of the longest-standing characters in one of the longest- running prime-time dramas in TV history, "Law & Order." That wasn't his only famous role, though. Others may remem- ber him as the stern father in "Dirty Dancing" (1987), or as Harry McGraw, a minor "Murder, She Wrote" character who got his own (short-lived) spinoff in the late '80s called "The Law and Harry McGraw." Q: Has anyone ever made a film adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel "Red Harvest"? A: No, but people have come close, in two different ways. Salon.com's Allen Barra, in an extensive article about the 75th anniversary of Hammett's first novel, details a number of times people have tried to make film versions of "Red Harvest." No one succeeded, but people have also come close in another sense — by sneaking elements of it into other movies. Barra argues that the reason a straight adaptation never got off the ground was political. In the late '40s and early '50s, at the height of Hammett's popularity and of the hard-boiled crime genre he helped create, the nov- el's pro-union sentiment got it caught up in the Red Scare that was tearing Hollywood apart. By the time all that died down, interest in the novel, and in Ham- mett, had waned. Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. Food Network's "Cake Wars" is back and sweeter than ever. Last week's premiere saw the contestants baking Star Wars- themed confections, and in this week's episode — airing Mon- day, Jan. 18 — they're getting their Seuss on. To celebrate "What Pet Should I Get," the Dr. Seuss children's book posthumously released last year, four expert bakers compete to craft a cake worthy of being the center of a Dr. Seuss-themed book release party. Naturally, these cakes aren't the kind of celebratory desserts that just anyone can whip up in their oven at home. No, "Cake Wars" features true masters of the craft, and these cakes defi- nitely double as works of art — literally, they're almost too good- looking to eat! Returning as host this season is actor Jonathan Bennett ("Mean Girls," 2004), while the judging panel consists of two master pasty chefs: Ron Ben-Isra- el ("Sweet Genius") and Way- lynn Lucas, along with a special guest judge. With each week featuring two race-against-the-clock challeng- es that test both the skill and cre- ativity of the contestants, the competition is grueling — but the rewards are worth it. Not only does the winner get their creations featured at a special event, but the sweet-toothed master baker also goes home with an extra sweet $10,000. Other episodes this season will feature the upcoming film "Kung Fu Panda 3," the video game phenomenon "Minecraft," comic book icon "Archie," the timeless children's story "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Facto- ry" and the classic "Alice in Won- derland," to name just a few of the many themes heading down the pipe. Best of all for us home bakers watching from our living rooms, though, is that Food Network shares the recipes of the winning cakes at FoodNetwork.com/ CakeWars. We can't all be master bakers, but at least we can pre- tend, right? "Cake Wars'" newest season just got underway, and catch the Dr. Seuss-themed episode Mon- day, Jan. 18, when it airs on Food Network.
