OUTDOOR TRUTHS A friend of mine shared with me about his recent hunting trip. He spent twelve days in the northwest hunting mountain lions. Out of those twelve days he was only able to hunt two of them. There was no snow which is essential for hunting those big cats. He came home disappointed. Another group spent several days in Mis- souri hunting deer. After nearly two weeks away most of them came home tired, empty handed, and disappointed as well. Many of my trips this year have also proved to be less than expected. The excuses abound but the emotions were always the same – disappointment. Disappointments are a very real part of life. They are as sure as death. They come disguised as things like hope, potential, and expectation. They play with our mind and heart. One is left confused and the other broken. Successful people have learned how to deal with this emo- tion. They have come to see disappointments not as a sur- prise but as commonplace. They understand they are a sign of people who expect great things and who look for the positive in a sometimes negative world. Someone has said, "Blessed are those who expect nothing, for they shall not be disappointed." It is true. If our expectations are low our disappointments will be few. For me, the price is too high. I had rather breathe in the rarifi ed air that surrounds those who expect great things from fl awed individuals. I had rather raise the bar of hope in my fel- low man than wallow in the same mire as others who are con- stantly negative. I don't know of a better New Year's resolution than to decide to expect great things from myself and others around me. The few times my expectations will be exceeded will far outweigh a multitude of disappointments. Broadway St., Forest City FAST FAST FAST FAST WAY WAY WAY WAY ©Community First Media Community First Media SPORTS SPORTS The stage was set last Tuesday as East Rutherford visited and R-S Central for a county showdown on the hardwood. At the end of the night, the R-S Central boys and girls basketball teams were celebratory. It was R-S Central's big three that outlasted East Rutherford's in a 63-59 Hilltopper victory. Josh Searcy (21 points/10 boards), Juwan Barnette (14 points) and Tyrese Tate (11 points) got the best of Juwan Blanton (18 points), Tyrese Carson (24 points) and Malik Hamrick (2 points/15 rebounds). Central also got 10 blocks between Zyrion Wilkins and Arnie Twitty in the game. R-S Central (11-4, 6-1) will go to Shelby for a huge game this Friday (1/15), then host Draughn (1/19) before going to Crest (1/22). East Rutherford (6-6, 3-5) will host Kings Mountain in a big game on Friday (1/15) then has to go to East Burke (1/19) and Asheville Christian Academy (1/21). On the ladies side, R-S Central (12-3, 7-0) broke away from an eight-point halftime lead and easily beat East Rutherford 71-44. Central held East to 20 second half points as Teja Twitty had 22 points and 20 rebounds in the win. Three other Central ladies were in double digits among scorers: Breyauna Lynch 14 points, Jada Logan 13 points and Aliyah Whiteside 12 points. Chase Men's basketball (6-7, 2-4) continues to play well, but lost close games to East Burke and East Rutherford before fi nishing the week with a win at East Henderson. The one- two punch of point guard Preston Walker and center Zach Anderson make them interesting. Chase isn't far off. They have role players in Tyrece McSwain, Treston Abrams and Bruce Squires on the fl oor as well. Chase will go to Burns (1/15), host Shelby (1/19) and visit Draughn (1/22). On the Men's side at Thomas Jefferson (6-7,1-3), they have won two of just their last six. However, they are in a very tough 1A conference. Nick Mintz (21 ppg) and Jaylon Simmons (14 ppg) lead the way for the Gryphons. Thomas Jefferson's ladies won two of three games last week and move to 3-6, 2-2 on the season. They host Community School of Davidson on Friday (1/15), visit Cherryville (1/19) and then come back to play at Cool Springs as they host Highland Tech (1/22). On the NFL scene, I think these games will be tough to decipher. All eight teams left really have the potential to win it all. So far, I am 3-1 on playoff picks. The biggest triumph is knowing that Cincy wouldn't win. How they lost, I never saw coming. Pittsburgh at Denver: Neither starting quarterback is completely healthy. I have a feeling Oswelier and Jones may see action. Peyton manning hasn't looked good all year and Big Ben may have a separated shoulder. So what do I trust? If Big Ben can't play, I trust Denver's defense and Osweiler if he has to relieve Manning. Denver 20-10. Kansas City at New England: Kansas City is the hottest team in the league with 11 straight wins, but winning at New England in the playoffs is unlikely. I give credit to the Chiefs though, they take care of the ball, use the run game effectively and defensively can get after it. With Belichick, Brady and Gronk leading the Patriots at home, I can't pick against them. New England 30-20. Green Bay at Arizona: This maybe the toughest game of all to pick. I picked against Green Bay last week because they haven't put together four quarters in a game all season. Normally, the Packers pick one quarter to play well in and down by two scores. That strategy may not work in the desert. Arizona's defense has been solid all year and their offense has scored over 23 points in all but four games. I don't like going against Aaron Rodgers for the second week in a row, but I think Arizona gets it done, 27-23 Cardinals. Seattle at Carolina: The Panthers have home fi eld advantage and already beat Seattle once this season. Seattle is playing well, no doubt, but Carolina has been consistent all year long. The Seahawks will have no option. Russell Wilson will have to beat the Panthers by throwing the football. Wilson is capable, but he doesn't have Marshawn Lynch or Jimmy Graham to rely on. Panthers…26-17. Many projects are specifi c to local areas of the state. If you don't see a species or location listed here that interests you, contact one of our regional supervisors for more information (Mountain region – kendrick.weeks@ncwildlife.org). Volunteer Opportunities: Help us incorporate strategies and recommendations for addressing impacts to fi sh and wildlife species, including climate change. State-wide Amphibian Survey: If you are familiar with frog calls, you can volunteer for a route with the Calling Amphibian Survey Program. This is a night survey where you listen for frog calls. The program requires being able to identify frogs by sound, but training sessions are available. To fi nd out more, go to the N.C. Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation website or contact Jeff Hall at jeff.hall@ncwildlife.org for more information or to choose a route. Breeding Bird Surveys Survey songbird populations by joining the North America Breeding Bird Survey. Coordinators and observers work to identify all breeding birds in their area by sight and sound. Surveys are conducted annually during the peak of breeding season. Contact scott.anderson@ncwildlife.org for more information. There are numerous opportunities for people across the country to engage in numerous citizen science opportunities including Project FeederWatch, the Great Backyard Bird Count, eBird and many others through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (www.birds.cornell.edu/citsci/). Peregrine Falcons: Peregrine falcons nest on cliffs in western North Carolina. Volunteers can help by monitoring cliff sites to document nesting attempts and whether mated pairs produce offspring. Contact Christine.kelly@ncwildlife.org for more information. Monitoring Song Birds: The Wildlife Diversity Program monitors songbird populations throughout the year using various methods, including aural surveys and bird banding. One ongoing project is our riparian breeding bird surveys (RBBS), which takes place in several river basins throughout the Piedmont and Coastal Plain from mid-May – late June. These surveys were designed to collect distribution and baseline data for Cerulean, Swainson's and Kentucky warblers as well as 10 other riparian species. The only requirements for volunteering are a desire to be out on the water looking for birds, the ability to paddle and navigate a canoe, and a reliable vehicle to help shuttle between put-in and take-out locations. This is a great opportunity to hear and see lots of unique birds in rarely visited habitats while simultaneously contributing to our knowledge of bird abundance and distribution in these ecosystems. Contact john.carpenter@ncwildlife. org for more information about this and other opportunities. Western North Carolina is home to an incredible diversity of amphibians. In addition to numerous statewide monitoring projects for amphibians, the Wildlife Diversity Program conducts targeted surveys and monitoring for numerous species including green salamander, hellbender, mudpuppy, and mountain chorus frog. Contact lori.williams@ncwildlife.org to fi nd out if you can help in your area of western North Carolina. Monitor Bat Populations: The Wildlife Diversity Program has several efforts underway to monitor North Carolina's bats (most in the mountains of NC), including winter surveys of hibernating bats, surveillance for White Nose Syndrome (a deadly bat disease), long term monitoring at summer habitats, and bat acoustic surveys (NC BAMP – Bat Acoustic Monitoring Program). Contact katherine.caldwell@ncwildlife.org to fi nd out about volunteer opportunities with bats. WANT TO BECOME A WANT TO BECOME A WILDLIFE PARTNER? WILDLIFE PARTNER?
