TV Media Weekly | January 9 - 15, 2016 Sunday morning | 7 By Shona Dustan TV Media Serious comedy: TBS is turn- ing all television industry tradi- tions on their heads and releasing the first season of its new half- hour cop comedy, "Angie Tribe- ca," in one long, commercial-free run. All 10 episodes of the first sea- son run back-to-back on TBS Sun- day, Jan. 17, at 9 p.m., and then keep running again and again until Monday, Jan. 18, at 10 p.m. This 25- hour marathon will cycle through the first season five times, and here's where the network's plan gets even more weird — though the series hasn't even premiered yet, TBS has already renewed the comedy for a second season, which premieres Monday, Jan. 25, and will air in a normal, weekly fashion. The anticipated comedy is the brainchild of Steve Carell ("The Of- fice") and his talented wife, Nancy ("The Goode Family"). It follows troubled cop Angie (Rashida Jones, "Parks and Recreation") as she navigates an existential crisis of sorts, treating every farcical mo- ment with the most sincere sobri- ety. It's a parody of the intense, uberserious crime thrillers that seem so prevalent today — in fact, many critics are calling it a spoof of HBO's "True Detective" specifically. But reducing the show to a mere spoof of some other work is selling "Angie Tribeca" short. While it is, by and large, a parody of the somber cop drama genre, the series stands on its own as an absurdist comedy. Stars Jere Burns ("Justified"), Hayes MacArthur ("Go On"), An- dree Vermeulen ("Dragons: Race to the Edge") and Jones are in top comedic form, and the series is sprinkled with comedy royalty such as Lisa Kudrow ("Friends") and Bill Murray ("Saturday Night Live"). TBS obviously believes in this project and has thrown all conven- tion out the window to help it make the splash it thinks it de- serves. Mere curiosity should be enough to get viewers to tune in en masse when "Angie Tribeca" premieres Sunday, Jan. 17, on TBS. Physical reality: WWE profes- sional wrestler John Cena ("Train- wreck," 2015) is headed to the small screen, but not in his usual capacity. This spring, Cena is step- ping out of the ring and into the new role of reality television host.
