The Milwaukee Post

December 24, 2015 • Milwaukee County Post • 5 "It makes sense that we look at locating these offend- ers away from neighbor- hoods, away from potential victims, and away from play- grounds and schools," Zielinski said in a state- ment. "A secure and remote location such as Ethan Allen would be a perfect place — in my opinion — to house these individuals." The facility is adjacent to Lapham Peak State Park on Boy School Road off Highway 83. It's within two miles of both Wales Elementary and Kettle Moraine High schools. Because the facility for- merly housed juvenile offenders, Zielinski said those in the neighborhood bought their property know- ing it was near a place "with problem people." "No matter where you live in the state, if you have the choice between having offenders in a neighborhood or in a safe facility, I think 99 percent would rather have them in a facility than door next to you," he said. NAACP proposal Meanwhile, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Wisconsin State Conference and the NAACP Milwaukee Branch pro- posed Monday that the facil- ity be reinstated to its for- mer use. The NAACP said it is call- ing on Gov. Scott Walker for the immediate closure of Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake schools in Irma and the reopening of the Ethan Allen School for Boys and Southern Oaks School. A response to media reports of "deplorable con- ditions" at Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake, the NAACP said it makes sense to house the youth in a facility closer to Milwaukee, where the majority of the youth are from. Irma is more than 200 miles north of Milwaukee. The former Ethan Allen property is about 30 miles west of the city. "By moving the children so far away, the majority of the children's families had longer distances to travel to visit their loved ones in con- finement," the statement said. "If the schools were closer to Milwaukee, it would also make it easier to hire more diverse staff per- sons and teachers. Additionally, more diverse organizations could interact with the schools to help pro- vide more transparency about the everyday condi- tions in the schools." The Department of Justice is investigating alle- gations of abuse at the youth prison.
